UPDATE: Carson City Fire Department knocked down a small brush fire Thursday afternoon in the area of Court Side Circle off of Oak Ridge Drive.

The fire, called into dispatch at around 2:05 p.m. was in a field, with smoke and flames showing and is was reportedly burning into a fence near a residence, according to first responders on scene.

According to a battalion chief on scene, the fire was burning at a low rate of spread when firefighters found it and prepared to knock it down. A fire investigator has been called to the scene. The cause is under investigation.

UPDATE: A Carson Now reader who helped fight the fire before CCFD arrived told us the following:

The fire at Oak Ridge and Ormsby was only slowly progressing when the fire department arrived is due to bystanders. I was first to stop on the scene and called it in but it had been reported. The fire fully engulfed 20-30 feet of fencing with high flames and threatening a close outbuilding. Two others arrived and tried small fire extinguishers. Myself and an another grabbed shovels out of a truck. And began trying to contain the flames with shovels. The owner of the fence was on the other side of the fence with a hose.

It was slowed by the time the fire department arrived because of our efforts. If not, that structure would’ve been engulfed. I suffered burns to my legs along with mild smoke inhalation by the time the fire department arrived. It would’ve been worse if people had not stopped to assist.

I don’t know who the other person that also assisted with a shovel but we fist bumped afterward.
