The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is joining the national ‘Friends of the Poor Walk’ fundraiser to raise awareness for poverty and continue providing their ongoing homeless prevention services in Carson City and Reno.
The fundraiser will take place Sept. 27, 2025 at Bishop Manogue High School in Reno.
Day after day in Northern Nevada, our Neighbors in Need struggle to make ends meet. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul – Reno District Council (SVDP) is helping individuals and families in Carson and Washoe Counties.
Our 60+ SVDP volunteers meet with households to distribute emergency food to the hungry, make payments to keep the utilities from being turned off, and provide tenant-based rental assistance to stop eviction proceedings.
SVDP volunteers continuously work to provide very-low and low income individuals and families with assistance regardless of religion, race, or national origin.
The Friends of the Poor Walk is a national fundraising effort organized in numerous cities and towns started eleven years ago to raise awareness of poverty and funds for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
We will be joining other Friends of the Poor Walks across the United States in an effort to eradicate poverty.
The funds raised from our Reno walk-a-thon will be spent locally and primarily be used for eviction/homeless prevention and for electric and natural gas utility bills.
We believe that the best way to reduce our homeless growing population is to make strategic investments that will keep very-low and low-income households in their primary residences (apartments, houses, hotels/motels, mobile homes and RVs).
Our limited resources do the most good when we are proactive and get involved before eviction notices are issued and prior to utility disconnect notices being sent to households.
Thank you,
Ed Choklek, President
