The second and final season of a two-year project to repave U.S. 50 between Spooner Summit to Stateline at Lake Tahoe is underway this summer.

This season, crews are repaving more than seven additional miles of highway and will finalize roadside curb and gutter, drainage and barrier, guardrail improvements.

During the first construction season in 2025, crews paved five and a half miles of U.S. 50 through the Stateline casino corridor to just south of Cave Rock, including new highway surface through the Stateline casino corridor.

Motorists will see traffic changes through October 2026 as crews pave and improve the remaining section of highway during the project’s final construction season.

ROADWORK THIS WEEK AND THROUGH EARLY AUGUST

This Sunday, August 2, from approximately 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., there will be one-lane flagger-controlled through the tunnel late Sunday night and possibly again Monday night as electricians pull wire at the Cave Rock tunnel.

There will be 24-hour work zones with single-lane closures Sundays at 8 p.m. and conclude at noon on Fridays. Crews will resume paving late August. In the meantime, crews will continue to finalize curb and gutter, drainage, barrier and guardrail.

PAVING UPDATES: 

  • Crews have continued the paving from Spooner Summit past Glenbrook. They will return later this season to complete the top one inch.
  • Paving operation from Glenbrook to Cave Rock will begin late August. While paving the Cave Rock tunnel, there will be traffic control, and travelers may encounter longer delays; more details are forthcoming.

REMINDERS:

  • Drivers can anticipate moderate travel delays through the work zone.
  • Work zones are there to improve the roads, and are not a place for impatient or aggressive driving.
  • Please Take it Slow Tahoe: speed is reduced to 35 mph through all zones.
  • Double penalty in work zones: the Nevada Revised Statute 484.3667 doubles the penalty for speeding, up to $1,000, in any marked road construction or maintenance work zone when workers are present. Go here for more information.
  • While access to businesses and residences will be continuously maintained in most areas, certain side streets and driveways will temporarily be impacted as as a moving operation for cold milling and paving takes place in the immediate area. Once the milling and paving equipment is safely out of the way, flaggers will release traffic at side streets and driveways.
