News Release
The Plumas National Forest, Beckwourth Ranger District would like to invite you to a meeting to help identify a Winter recreation trail system for the Smith Peak/Lake Davis area. The meeting will be held on July 31st at the Beckwourth Ranger District conference room at 10:00 am. We will review the map proposed by the public for motorized and non-motorized trails within this planning area.
The district started public collaboration on this project in January of 2012, public meetings were held on January 26 and March 7.
Our work includes;
— Establishing a winter recreation trail system for snowmobiles. These motorized trails will be marked and groomed, and a staging area will be identified and evaluated.
— Cross-country skiers and “quiet” winter recreationalists are also looking for an experience that meets their solitude; we have identified a place for the non-motorized users to enjoy a peaceful winter experience.
— Maintaining winter road access for fisherman keeping ice fishing opportunities open for public enjoyment.
— The protection of sensitive species, bald eagles, great grey owls and goshawks that hunt, fish and nest during the winter season. The Forest Service is concerned in maintaining un-fragmented blocks of natural habitat adjacent to meadow systems, riparian or other sensitive habitats to reduce incursions on these systems.
Attached is a map that the District complied showing all the public’s comments and ideas.
Your knowledge of the area is of great value, and your input will help to ensure that your values are given proper consideration in project planning and implementation.
Your participation in this analysis is welcome at any time prior to the District Ranger’s decision. I invite you to join us on July 31, 2012 at the Beckwourth Ranger District conference room at 10:00 am for a public meeting to review the public proposal. Please understand that this proposal is just for the WINTER recreation component of this project.
