Hot temperatures will continue through Wednesday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Heat Advisory for western Nevada including Carson City, Carson Valley, Lyon and Storey counties and the greater Reno, Sparks areas.

The weather service says there’s a low possibility (5 to 10 percent chance) for isolated thunderstorms Sunday, with increasing chances Monday and Tuesday.

The Heat Advisory is through 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Reno International Airport hit 101 degrees Saturday, the first 100+ degree day of the year. Temperatures will be hotter Sunday, with western Nevada areas such as Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas reaching triple digits Sunday and Monday, with Sierra communities seeing temperatures in the low to mid 90s.

Unfortunately, with relatively high overnight lows, heat recovery isn’t ideal, NWS forecasters said. Forecasters urge people to limit time outdoors during peak heating hours (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and make sure to stay hydrated.

As northern California and southern Oregon fires continue, smoke infiltration will continue to impact much of the area, bringing hazy skies.

Due to strong surface heating, there is an increase in instability allowing for the 5 to 10 percent chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms, primarily along the Sierra each afternoon, forecasters said.

As a low pressure system drops down from Canada by the middle of next week, shower chances increase Tuesday through Thursday, according to NWS forecasters.

That low pressure will also help bring afternoon high temperatures down to near-normal. There may be cool down by midweek but this will be relatively short-lived as another high pressure system starts to build moving into the weekend, NWS forecasters said.

Avoid strenuous outdoor activities and drink plenty of water.
