Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space announced it will continue preventative fire measures at the Prison Hill Off Highway Vehicle Area and the motorized trailhead/parking located on Golden Eagle Lane in Carson City. During days when there’s a Red Flag wind warning issued, the trail will be closed.
A Red Flag Warning is a forecast warning issued by the National Weather Service to inform the public, firefighters, and land management agencies that a combination of fuel conditions and weather conditions are ideal for wildland fire ignition, and rapid spread.
(At the time of this reporting, Monday, July 4, 2022, there are no Red Flag Warnings in Carson City and surrounding areas.)
Red flag criteria include a relative humidity of 15 percent or less with sustained winds, or frequent gusts, above 25 mph. Both conditions must occur simultaneously for at least 3 hours in a 12-hour period.
Closures of the Prison Hill OHV area will typically occur in the afternoon when conditions for fire risk are highest. It is the motorized users’ responsibility to be aware of Red Flag Warning days and plan outdoor recreation accordingly.
Additionally, regardless of conditions, it is important that users recreate responsibly by staying on designated roads and areas, and carry a shovel, water, and fire extinguisher in the event of an incident. Visit www.weather.gov/rev/ or nevadafireinfo.org for current red flag warning updates.
