Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space invites residents to its Prison Hill West Trail grand opening, happening today, Saturday, June 14 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Meet at the Koontz Lane Trailhead for a Prison Hill West Trail ribbon cutting at 9 a.m., a guided interpretive hike, a guided bike ride and adaptive bikes available for demo by any adaptive riders thanks to Reno Adaptive.

The new 2.5 mile-long trail is also a part of this year’s Trail Challenge, so come enjoy a guided hike or ride and log your miles.

The new addition to Carson City’s trail system has three components:

  1. Improvements to the Koontz Lane Trailhead, including a regraded access road, parking for 20-30 vehicles, ADA parking, equestrian trailer parking, vault toilet, and covered picnic table.
  2. Construction of an approximately 2.4 mile multi-use pathway connects the Koontz Lane Trailhead with the Clearview Drive Trailhead and the Staging Area entrance at the south end of Prison Hill. This pathway was constructed with a compacted DG (decomposed granite) surface to make it accessible to everyone, including families with small children and persons with mobility limitations.
  3. Safe street crossing of Edmonds Drive at Koontz Lane includes a crosswalk and flashing beacons. This provides enhanced access for neighborhoods on the west side of I-580 to the Prison Hill Recreation Area, and also provide a better way for neighborhoods on the east side of I-580 to access the Freeway Multi-Use Pathway.

The project is funded through the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act (SNPLMA), which authorizes the sale of BLM-administered federal lands in the Las Vegas Valley and the proceeds are used for federal, state and local projects that benefit communities and public lands.
