Carson City and the surrounding region has been placed on a red flag warning through the night, so please be aware of the fire danger that can occur if combustibles, fuels and fires aren’t managed properly.

Currently, the red flag warning has been issued through Friday June 13 at 11 p.m. but is subject to change depending in conditions.

The affected areas include Carson City, Douglas, Storey, Southern Washoe, Western Lyon, and far southern Lassen Counties, as well as the West Humbolt Basin in Pershing County and Lahontan Basin including Churchill and Eastern Mineral Counties.

Information from the National Weather Service:
Winds are blowing Southwest to west 15-25 mph with gusts 35-40 mph and there is minimum humidity of 6-12% in the afternoon with poor overnight recoveries of 20-40% tonight into Saturday morning.

The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them. These dry and windy conditions could also rekindle fires in areas which received lightning in recent days.

Dry conditions and shorter periods of gusty winds will also produce elevated to locally critical fire weather conditions each afternoon through early next week.

Be prepared

Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires. Follow local fire restrictions.
