An incoming weather system will bring cooler conditions, gusty winds and light rain showers to Carson City and surrounding counties this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Gusty afternoon winds are expected Saturday and Sunday, with gusts 30 mph to 40 mph in western Nevada and up to 80 mph along the Sierra crest, forecasters said. A Lake Wind Advisory is underway for Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake. There are no advisories at this time for the greater Carson City area.

The quick moving low pressure system will also include showers and isolated thunderstorms, as well. Saturday will be the coolest day of the weekend with highs in the 50s and 60s across much of the area, NWS forecasters said.

The best chance for showers and thunderstorms will be in northeast California and along the Oregon border, with a 70 to 90 percent chance for showers and 25 to 30 percent chance for lightning. Chances gradually decrease southward across the area, with a 40 to 60 percent chance for showers in western Nevada and a 10 to 15 percent chance lightning, forecasters said.

Shower and thunderstorm chances along the Sierra will be 10 to 20 percent. Snow levels will be above 8,000 feet with little to no snow accumulations expected.

Winds stay elevated Sunday while temperatures remain cool. Wind gusts will be more widespread, with gusts up to 40 mph across western Nevada. Wind gusts along the Sierra will be a bit lower than Saturday with gusts up to 60 mph. The low pressure quickly leaves the area by Sunday afternoon, allowing for clearing skies and temperatures in the 60s for the majority of the area.

A warming trend begins Monday, with temperatures expected to climb above normal into the 80s for the valley areas.
