Carson High School is proud to celebrate senior Maliyah Roque-Ortega, a student whose warmth, drive and commitment to making a difference have made her a standout member of the CHS community.

From the very beginning of her high school journey, Maliyah set herself apart. As a first-generation college-bound student, she arrived with a clear vision for her future and the determination to make it happen. Over the past four years, she has not only met those goals, but she has also exceeded them in every way.

Academically, Maliyah shines with an impressive 4.65 GPA while taking on a rigorous schedule of AP and honors courses. As an AP Capstone Diploma Candidate, she has demonstrated exceptional critical thinking and research skills. Her AP Research project focused on mindfulness in the elementary classroom, specifically exploring emotional regulation and identification, work that reflects both her intellectual curiosity and her genuine care for others.

What truly makes Maliyah special is the way she connects with people. She has built strong, meaningful relationships with peers, teachers, coaches, administrators and counselors across campus, becoming someone others naturally gravitate toward. Her leadership is evident in her role as Vice President of FBLA, where she contributes both vision and positivity to the organization.

A dedicated athlete, Maliyah has been a varsity swimmer for several years, showing the same discipline and perseverance in the pool that she brings to the classroom. Outside of school, she continues that passion at the Carson City pool, where she works as a swim instructor. Her impact there has been profound, earning her the well-deserved honor of Instructor of the Year. It’s no surprise to those who know her that she thrives in spaces where she can mentor and uplift young people.

Maliyah’s passion for working with children extends into her academic pathway as well. As a completer in the Teach and Train CTE program, she has discovered a calling in education. Inspired by her former elementary school teachers, Mrs. Donaldson and Mrs. Lepire at Fritsch Elementary School, whose joy and enthusiasm left a lasting impression, Maliyah is eager to create that same sense of belonging and excitement for future students of her own.

The daughter of a firefighter and an esthetician, Maliyah has been raised with a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for education. Her parents’ support and example have helped shape her into the compassionate, driven young woman she is today. Beyond family, Maliyah is very proud of the strong group of friends she has created. They balance each other and push one another to become the best they can be in all realms of life.

This fall, Maliyah will attend the University of Nevada, Reno to pursue a degree in elementary education. There is no doubt that she will continue to inspire those around her, just as she has done at Carson High. Maliyah Roque-Ortega is the kind of student who reminds us all what it means to lead with heart, purpose and joy. Carson High School is incredibly proud of her and cannot wait to see the impact she will make in the world.
