This coming Tuesday, May 4, will mark one month since the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and veteran-led organization Team Rubicon launched their mobile COVID-19 vaccination effort for rural Nevada.

For the past month, volunteers have distributed vaccines to communities along a North and South route, which include several tribal nations, using FEMA’s Mobile Vaccination Units (MVUs).

FEMA and Team Rubicon will complete each route a second time to distribute the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine.

As experts in logistics and disaster response, Team Rubicon is leading the MVU operations in order to ensure it runs smoothly.

As of April 28, Team Rubicon has helped administer more than 1,356,978 COVID-19 vaccinations across more than 70 cities.

FEMA sent two mobile vaccination units (MVUs) to the state to support equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccine to vulnerable populations in rural and tribal areas where limited medical infrastructure exists.

Nevada Division of Emergency Management, Nevada National Guard, and the Nevada State Immunization Program teamed up with county and tribal officials to use these units to reach communities to promote vaccine equity and inclusion.

Veteran-led nonprofit Team Rubicon supported the mobile vaccine effort by performing services including patient check-in and registration, queue management, and wraparound support.

The mobile units began to arrive in Nevada on April 5, the same day COVID-19 vaccine eligibility opened up to all Nevadans 16 and older.

“COVID-19 vaccines are the way we get back to the moments the pandemic put on hold,” said Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak in early April. “It’s imperative that every Nevadan has access to these life-saving vaccines, so we’re grateful for the opportunity to partner with FEMA. This helps in our efforts to provide equitable distribution to populations in rural and tribal areas.”
