Showers and thunderstorms return Tuesday afternoon around the region, primarily impacting areas surrounding the Lake Tahoe Basin, including Reno and Carson City. Expect brief heavy rainfall with gusty winds, according to the National Weather Service.
A couple showers have popped up Tuesday afternoon south of the Tahoe Basin, primarily in Alpine and Douglas counties. Showers and thunderstorms will progress north through this afternoon, impacting Sierra front and the Lake Tahoe Basin communities through sunset.
Thunderstorm and lightning potential is greater along the higher elevations, forecasters said. Sierra front communities will likely only experience rain showers Tuesday.

Wednesday and Thursday
Meanwhile, spring conditions continue with a chance of valley showers and thunderstorms Wednesday and Thursday around Carson City and surrounding counties before temperatures climb again this weekend.
Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are possible with isolated areas of heavy rainfall possible, especially Wednesday and Thursday, forecasters said. The cold front may bring light, mountain snow to Mono County.
There’s a 20 to 40 percent chance Wednesday, for showers and thunderstorms over the Sierra and portions of far western Nevada, including Mineral County north to the Washoe Valley, forecasters said. On Thursday, the chances for showers and thunderstorms increases to 30 to 60 percent across the same area.
Forecasters had said in an earlier briefing that there’s a potential for gusty winds, occasional lightning, and brief downpours. The system, forecasters noted, may not move through with much speed, making for the potential — around 5 percent — for flash flooding. No watches have been issued at this point. Check back for updates.
The system will bring gusty winds and cooler temperatures. Winds look to be generally from the north in the 20 mph to 30 mph range, and stronger over mountains and wind prone areas, with gusts between 35-45 mph.
The colder air will drop snow levels down in the higher elevation mountains. Snow accumulations will be generally light and restricted to the highest elevations in Mono County, according to NWS forecasters.
For Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas, there’s a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 a.m. Wednesday. It will be mostly cloudy with highs near 70.
Thursday will bring a chance of showers with highs in the 60s. By Friday temperatures will be in the 60s, with sunny, dry and warming conditions returning in time for Easter weekend.
