FitzHenry’s Funeral Home, under the leadership of General Manager Marie Finkes, hosted a Narcan (naloxone) training session on Thursday, March 12, 2026, in partnership with the Carson City Fire Department. The training provided an overview of opioid overdose recognition, Narcan administration and post-overdose care.

Attendees included staff from FitzHenry’s Funeral Home, members of the Carson City Coroner’s Office, and representatives from Donor Network organization. The session was designed to educate “last responders” — individuals working in the funeral industry — about the safe and effective use of Narcan and the circumstances in which it should be administered.

During the training, the Carson City Fire Department covered how to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose and demonstrated how Narcan can be administered in emergency situations. Participants also learned about post-overdose care and safety considerations. Trainers emphasized that Narcan can be safely administered to adults, medically compromised individuals, children, and even domestic pets. The session concluded with a question-and-answer period that allowed attendees to discuss real-world scenarios and best practices.

“Due to the rise of the opioid crisis and the increasing availability of opioid-reversal agents, it is becoming highly relevant for ‘last responders’ — such as funeral directors, morticians, and community members — to carry and know how to use Narcan,” said Marie Finkes, General Manager of FitzHenry’s Funeral Home.

FitzHenry’s Funeral Home plans to continue offering free Narcan training sessions to other last responders, as well as government employees and local businesses throughout the community.
