A 20-year-old Reno man was booked Friday into Carson City Jail for his alleged involvement in a cluster of 11 vehicle burglaries, evading and other offenses between August 31 and Sept. 1, according to a Carson City Sheriff’s Office booking report.
Richard Alexander Ayoub was booked on the multiple charges, including evading officers in a vehicle pursuit, and possession of a stolen vehicle. Two others, a juvenile (age not provided) and 19-year-old Jayden Lewellin were also arrested in Washoe County for alleged crimes involving a stolen Washoe County School District vehicle and vehicle burglary in Reno and Carson City as part of the investigation.
According to the booking report, a CCSO detective assigned to the Criminal Investigation Bureau was assigned to assist the patrol division with a cluster of vehicle burglaries that happened between August 31 and Sept. 1 in the area of Country Village Drive in Carson City.
A total of 11 vehicles were burglarized when suspects entered them and searched for items to steal from inside. Among the stolen items were wallets, IDs, credit cards, a took kit and a backpack containing personal items.
Based on the patterns, locations and unlocked conditions of all vehicles, it appears the suspects checked the door handles of the vehicles in the area. The suspects entered unlocked vehicles and searched for items of value to steal, the report states. No locked vehicles were entered.
Video surveillance was recovered showing three suspects. Additionally, the suspects are alleged to have stolen a credit/debit card that was later used Sept. 1 at several Sparks locations.
Suspects in Sept. 1 vehicle pursuit were in stolen Washoe County School District vehicle
On Sept. 1, deputies were dispatched to a vehicle burglary in progress with a report of shots fired in the 1800 block of East Long. Deputies arrived and located a white Ford Fusion, occupied by three suspects who had entered the vehicle.
Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle but it fled and did not yield to the emergency lights and sirens of pursuing officers. The vehicle exceeded speeds of 100 mph and went airborne at one point during the pursuit. The vehicle eluded deputies and left Carson City northbound into Washoe County, the report states.
The vehicle was a Washoe County School District administrative vehicle. The investigation later determined the vehicle had been confirmed stolen and reported to law enforcement in Reno. The vehicle was equipped with an owner-installed GPS device.
The Reno Police Department began to track the vehicle and stopped the suspects at 1200 South Meadows Parkway in Reno following a short vehicle and foot pursuit. Two of the three suspects were arrested and identified, one being a juvenile and the other, Jayden Lewellin, 19, the report states. The third suspect, later identified as Richard Alexander Ayoub, escaped.
Lewellin was wearing similar clothing and matched the suspects’ descriptions in the Carson City vehicle burglary series and pursuit. They were in possession of the confirmed stolen vehicle, which contained a firearm, the report states. The juvenile was wearing an electric monitoring GPS bracelet as part of his supervised release from Washoe County Juvenile Services. He was on supervised release from Washoe County for alleged battery with a deadly weapon after shooting someone in the face, the report states.
License plate reader data and camera footage indicated the juvenile and Lewellin were the same suspects and were in the same stolen vehicle that the Reno Police Department encountered during its investigation and arrests.
The CCSO sergeant conducted interviews with Lewellin and the juvenile at their respective detention facilities on Sept. 1. Lewellin admitted to his involvement in the vehicle burlgaries and stated he was the driver of the vehicle during the pursuit in Carson City. He admitted that he and the other suspects went to several businesses in Sparks and used a victim’s debit card, which had been stolen from the vehicle in Carson City.
GPS data from the stolen WCSD vehicle and the juvenile’s electronic monitoring bracelet were examined. The GPS data from both sources confirmed the juvenile and the stolen vehicle were in the area during the vehicle burglaries and the vehicle pursuit. The same GPS data matched the locations and times in Sparks where the victim’s credit card was used after being stolen from their vehicle in Carson City.
An arrest warrant was requested for the juvenile and Lewellin, who claimed the third suspect was Richard Alexander Ayoub. RPD arrested Ayoub Oct. 8 for vehicle burglary in Washoe County. A detective identified Ayoub as the third suspect through recorded jail telephone calls from his ongoing investigation, the report states.
During a Sept. 11 recorded call between Lewellin and Ayoub involving a telephone number, they discussed fighting a person at a gas station. Lewellin stated the detectives had shown him video where he stated “it’s good that I blacked out because I would have been with you all doing dumb shit.” The report did not establish when he was in relation to the Carson City burglaries, the report states.
On Sept. 23, a detective reviewed another recorded call between the two. During the call, Ayoub described crashing near a gas station and calling Lewellin for a ride and fighting the person who confronted him. Lewellin described a video showing himself and Ayoub standing over that person. Their statements were consisted with the documented gas station incident.
Based on the identification of Ayoub from RPD’s newly discovered information, along with Lewellin’s statements, the Carson City investigation of the GPS location from the stolen Ford Fusion showed the vehicle left the gas station and drove to Carson City immediately after, where he participated in multiple vehicle burglaries with Lewellin and the juvenile. Ayoub was identified as the third suspect, the report states.
On Oct. 9, Ayoub was released from Washoe County Jail and brought to Carson City Jail where he was booked for 11 counts of alleged vehicle burglary, eluding a peace officer and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. Bail: $15,000.
