In a massive win for community literacy, the Friends of the Carson City Library and Browsers Corner Book Store recently handed over a $75,000 check to Library Director Joy Holt. The donation marks a major milestone for the volunteer-run bookstore, pushing its total lifetime library contributions past the $500,000 mark over the last 12 years.

Equally impressive, Carson City readers have officially read their way into the record books. The wildly popular Summer Reading Challenge program run by the library, and partly funded by the Friends’ donation, confirmed that the community is reading at double the pace of last year.

2 Million Minutes and Counting

Carson City residents absolutely crushed the library’s 2026 Summer Reading Challenge, with over 1,000 participants logging an incredible 2,042,242 minutes on the tracking app Beanstack. That is nearly double the 1 million minutes logged during the 2025 challenge.

Where the Money Goes

The $75,000 donation is directly funding the programs that keep Carson City connected, curious, and turning pages:

  • Summer Reading Challenge: Keeping readers of all ages exploring and learning through the summer months.
  • Capital City Reads: The library’s signature spring initiative, which distributes free copies of a single, deeply relevant book to the entire community to spark civic conversation.
  • The Ingram In-Demand Program: A lease initiative ensuring locals get instant access to hot new bestsellers and award-winning titles without massive waitlists.
  • E-Books & More / Digital Collection: Expanding digital collections, audiobooks, and the library’s popular screen-free learning kits.

How to Get Involved

“The bookstore is staffed entirely by dedicated volunteers who gift their time and talents,” representatives said, noting that up to 95% of all net proceeds from Browsers Corner go directly to the library.

The bookstore only sells inventory donated by community members. Shelves are constantly packed with everything from popular fiction and children’s books to history, self-help, and coffee table art books — all sold at rock-bottom prices to fund the library.
