A late winter storm moving into the region Sunday will bring gusty winds to the lower valleys, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a High Wind Warning for Carson City and surrounding counties.

Strong, gusty and potentially damaging winds arrive ahead of the next storm Sunday, according to the weather service, with southwest gusts up to 65 mph, creating difficult travel for high profile vehicles. The warning is from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Forecasters advise to secure outdoor furniture and expect aviation, recreation and potential road impacts associated with the strong winds.

Meanwhile, another storm will make its way to Lake Tahoe and Sierra by Sunday, with anywhere between 6 to 12 inches of snow in the mountains below 7,000 feet and 1 to 2 feet potential along the Sierra crest, with ridge wind gusts of 100 mph.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. Sunday to 11 p.m. Monday for the greater Lake Tahoe area, as well as Lassen, East Plumas and Sierra counties in California.

Motorists should prepare for hazardous travel conditions starting on Sunday and continuing through Monday in the Sierra and northeastern California, forecasters said. See NVroads.com for the latest travel information.

Potential for slick roads Monday around Carson City

For the lower valleys of Reno, Carson City, Douglas and Lyon counties, Sunday will bring sunshine along with the gusty winds, with showers mainly after 11 p.m.

The storm system will continue through Monday, with snow showers reaching western Nevada valleys along the Sierra Front ahead of morning commute. Valley accumulations will be “little to none” but roads may be slick, NWS forecasters said. Foothill communities such as Virginia City, Verdi, Galena, could see 1 to 3 inches of snow early Monday morning.

The storm should move out by Monday night, with sunny skies and highs in the upper 40s for Tuesday. A warmup is expected by midweek.
