Twenty-nine cadets from the Carson High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) attended and learned about the importance of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) in San Francisco earlier this month.

They learned about careers in the USCG and their missions including search and rescue, maritime security, environmental protection and management, maintaining flow of maritime commerce, etc.

They had a chance to board the USCGC Tern (WPB-87343) a Marine Protector class patrol boat and the USCGC Alder (WLB-216) a Juniper-class seagoing buoy tender. As well, they watched Sector San Francisco’s Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) in action as they controlled vessels entering and exiting the port of San Francisco.

They were also exposed to several small boats and numerous types of navigational aids to mariners that the station monitors and controls. Overall, it was a great experience and insight into the USCG.

Several job fields ranging from Maritime Law Enforcement, Intelligence, Information Technology Systems support, Port Operations, Marine Science Technicians (environmental protection specialists), Propulsion specialists and many more were represented and experienced.
