Sunday’s snowfall across Western Nevada may make for difficult driving conditions Monday morning with snow-covered highways and roadways, as well as potential white-out conditions due to blowing snow in wind-prone areas, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said.
“In regards to the already snow-covered roads, travel problems may be further exacerbated this morning by low visibility/whiteout conditions in blowing snow as the snow and wind intensify,” the NWS said. “Winter headlines remain in place through this morning for this reason in the northern Sierra.”
According to the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), chains or snow tires are required on the following area highways and roadways Monday morning:
— I-580 from mile post 0.5 in Washoe County to mile post 6.5 through Washoe Valley.
— Old U.S. Highway 395 Alternate in the Washoe Valley from mile post 0.0 to mile post 7.22 in Washoe County.
— U.S. Highway 395 from mile post 0.2 to mile post 29.3 in Douglas County.
— U.S. Highway 50 West at Spooner Summit, including 14.7 miles from the county line east into Carson City and for 14.6 miles in Douglas County along the shore of Lake Tahoe.
— State Route 88 from the state line to 7.8 miles into Douglas County.
— SR 341 from the Washoe County line for 6.3 miles down Geiger Grade, and from mile post 3.0 in Lyon County to mile post 10.8 in Storey County.
— SR 431 from mile post 0.2 in Washoe County up the Mount Rose Highway to mile post 17.3 in Washoe County.
— SR 28 from mile post 0.0 in Douglas County to mile post 11 in Washoe County along the shore of Lake Tahoe.
— SR 207 from mile post 0.0 in Douglas County to mile post 12 up Kingsbury Grade.
Scattered snow showers are forecast for Monday morning mainly before 10 a.m., the NWS said, with a 40 percent chance of precipitation and total daytime snow accumulation of about an inch possible in the Carson City area.
Sustained winds of around 15-20 miles per hour (mph) are expected with gusts to 35 mph, the NWS said. Watch for blowing snow in wind-prone areas and particularly valleys across Western Nevada.
A chance of snow showers persists through Tuesday morning, the NWS reports, but dropping to only 20 percent overnight.
High temperate Monday is forecast for 41 degrees and an overnight low into Tuesday of around 27 in Carson City.
Tuesday is forecast to reach 47 degrees, and by mid-week warmer temperatures return to the region with daytime highs in the upper 50s to about 60 degrees.
