A weather system will move through the region Sunday, bringing snow to the Sierra and light rain/snow showers and gusty winds to the valleys around Carson City and surrounding counties, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures will climb into the 60s and low 70s Saturday across western Nevada before changing by early Sunday as the weather pattern brings a cold front through the region, bringing down temperatures, forecasters said.

The coming storm, which NWS forecasters say may bring 4 to 8 inches of snow to Lake Tahoe and Mono County, has prompted the weather service to issue a Winter Weather Advisory from 10 p.m., Saturday to Monday, 4 p.m.

NWS forecasters note temperatures will drop early Sunday to more February-like temperatures. Snow levels will be from 6,500 feet to 7,000 feet late Saturday evening across the Sierra to around to around 4,500 to 5,000 feet by Sunday. Snow levels will continue to drop to valley floors overnight Sunday into Monday morning, forecasters said.

Those driving in the area may experience slick and slushy roadways and wind gusts of 25 mph in the lower elevations. See NVroads.com for the latest travel update.

The system will open up an active but cooler period of weather conditions that will continue into next week with the subsequent passage of another cold storm system Wednesday into Thursday, forecasters said.

Weather models show a colder winter storm system bringing another round of snow to the Sierra by Wednesday morning with showers continuing through Thursday. Current simulations still project a more southerly storm track favoring areas south of Highway 50. Check back for updates.
