Another strong Pacific storm is making its way into the Sierra and western Nevada this Thursday bringing heavy rain, localized flooding, potentially damaging winds and high elevation snow, according to the National Weather Service.

Flooding for creeks, streams, and poor drainage areas will be possible again Thursday as the final atmospheric river for this week is expected to sweep across the Sierra. There will be clearing by the time the weekend arrives, with the potential for another system later next week.

The weather system will likely be as strong in intensity as the last storm, however, it is narrower and likely to move quickly from north to south, according to the weather service. Heavy rainfall is possible in an intense 6-12 hour period. For the Reno and Carson City areas this is forecast to be in the late afternoon or early evening Thursday.

With small streams and urban areas still producing some flooding, a Flood Warning remains in effect for much of western Nevada including Carson City, Douglas, Storey and west central Lyon counties. With the coming Thursday storm, there’s a renewed risk of more flooding along creeks, streams and poor drainage areas will accompany the heavy rainfall and a flood watch is again in effect for the Sierra and Sierra Front Thursday.

Very strong winds are expected again on Thursday and will likely be the strongest wind event in the storm series, according to the weather service. Around the Carson City area, wind gusts of up to 70 mph are possible and gusts of 80 mph possible in wind prone areas. The weather services advises tree root systems that have weakened by recent heavy rain and snow are prone to falling in high winds. Power outages and property damage such as downed fences are also possible. The weather service advises to bring in patio furniture, garbage cans and pets.

Property damage will also be possible with trees and fences possibly blown over. The peak winds are expected Thursday. A High Wind Warning is in effect for Carson City and the Sierra Front Thursday.
