We all have the same 24 hours in a day. However, it’s how we manage ourselves within time that makes the difference. Today is the kick-off of Motivation Monday at Adams Hub for Innovation in Carson City. I will be at Adams Hub every Monday from 10 am until 2 pm helping business owners, entrepreneurs, and leaders discover and benefit from their sources for motivation.
I had the pleasure of coaching one man this morning. The session inspired this article.
How you manage yourself within time is directly associated with the payoffs you get for the action you take.
For example, if you like to sleep in on weekends, your payoff may be:
I deserve this.
I am taking care of myself.
No one can ask anything of me if I’m asleep.
I feel peace when I’m asleep.
Your payoff for waking up at your normal time on weekends may be:
I can have time to myself.
I can relax, create, or get things done around the house.
I like to feel productive seven days a week.
I like a quiet house before everyone wakes up.
Both sides of the coin have a pay-off. Self-management within time is about knowing your pay-offs, being honest with what you get out of them, and taking action on your greatest benefit. Even inaction is action. It’s a series of choices which, when added together, make up a day. That day is then either productive or unproductive based on the goals you have set for yourself.
This busts the time management myth wide open and aligns directly with the belief system of “work smart, not hard.” Just because you work a lot, does not mean you are productive. Have a look at your day. Where do you spend your time? How do you feel during certain activities? What is your biggest energy suck? What activities are your biggest time suck? Do you loosen the reins on self-management when you get caught up in social media, email, meetings without an agenda, or conversations with co-workers? Pay attention and take notes for yourself. Or better, if you want help, post below or show up for Motivation Monday. I’m here to help.
