A 70-year-old woman was arrested early Tuesday for suspicion of DUI, according to a Carson City Sheriff’s Office booking report.

Deputies responded at 4:54 a.m. to the area of East William Street and Gold Dust Way in reference to an accident. A man called and claimed he was in an accident and was in pain. The man told dispatch that the other involved driver appeared intoxicated.

Deputies met with the person who was hit and the other driver involved. Judging from the scene of the crash, it appeared to be a low speed “rear rend” type crash, the report states. The deputy asked the suspect driver what happened. She was sitting in the driver’s seat and did not give the deputy a straight answer.

As the deputy spoke with the woman they noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from her person. She had thick, slurred speech and red, watery eyes. The deputy asked how much she had to drink. She did not answer, the report states.

The deputy asked the woman to exit the vehicle. While speaking with her the deputy could still smell an strong odor of alcohol coming from her person. She had a difficult time balancing and was continuously swaying while standing. The deputy asked if she was willing to participate in field sobriety tests. She did not give the deputy a straight answer. The deputy asked if she was OK with starting with the horizontal gaze nystagmus test. She said yes.

The woman performed the field sobriety test and showed signs of impairment on the test. At this point, she stated she no longer wanted to participate in field sobriety tests. She did consent to a preliminary breath test, which she blew a .190, the report states.

Based on the observations from the investigation, the woman was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI. The deputy read the request for voluntary evidence. She elected to freely and voluntarily submit to an evidentiary breath sample. She was taken to jail and submitted to evidentiary breath samples of .197 and .189, according to the report.

Deputies obtained a copy of the surveillance footage of the crash from a nearby intersection camera. In the video, the victim vehicle was traveling east of William Street and stops his vehicle at a red light to merge north onto I-580. The woman’s vehicle is then seen approaching the victim vehicle from the rear. The woman’s vehicle then strikes the rear bumper of the victim vehicle, due to failing to stop at the red light. Bail; $1,137.
