The arriving winter storm brings significant snow to the Sierra and rain to Western Nevada through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

For the Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas, rain continues throughout the night. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible overnight. There’s a 50 percent chance of rain Saturday afternoon and a 30 percent chance Saturday night. The High Wind Warning remains in effect until 4 a.m. Saturday.

After a brief break Sunday, another storm system is likely Sunday night and Monday with additional rain and high elevation snow, according to the weather service.

Snow levels will fluctuate rapidly with this storm. Snow level radar has observed snow levels between about 5,000 to 9,500 feet. Accumulating snow has been observed below 6,000 feet in northern California on Friday, however, significant snow accumulation is expected to remain mainly above 7,500 feet.

While snow levels are expected to rise significantly by Saturday, a short period of slushy accumulation is likely over Sierra passes. Expect winter weather driving conditions over the Sierra passes.

On Sunday a second storm will bring another round of significant precipitation to the region. The second storm is expected to be colder with a better chance of widespread accumulating snow down to 6,000 feet.
