DETR Press Release

The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s (DETR) Rehabilitation Division announced that due to the pandemic, the 2021 Nevada Shadow Day was held virtually on Tuesday, February 2nd and was a great success.
This special day highlighted the importance of providing opportunities for Nevada students with disabilities to explore careers. This year, nearly 60 students with disabilities statewide were afforded an opportunity to experience a variety of careers first-hand, ranging from café management, to fire prevention, to management of beauty salons/spas.
Job shadowing is about education, information, and participation and involves having an employee in your business work with a student, allowing them to “step into their shoes.”
Students were able to observe and learn aspects of a specific job, or career, learn about the business, and competencies required on the job.
“We are very pleased to see this program’s growth and success with each passing year,” said Shelley Hendren, administrator for DETR’s Rehabilitation Division. “This initiative encourages professionals to provide students with job shadowing experience thereby providing a preview of industries and careers. Each year it is inspiring to see how this experience instigates the next generation of professionals to pursue careers, create public awareness of the hard work and economic contributions students with disabilities can make to the community, and encourage businesses to sponsor and participate in this relevant event in the future.”
2021 participating businesses represented varied industries incorporating communications, education, business, and government. These included: DETR Rehabilitation Division, DHHS Division of Child and Family Services, Starbucks Roasting Plant, PBS Reno, Lake Tahoe Community College, Tahoe Fire District, and Escape Salon and Spa.
