Seeing brighter futures, the Dayton Valley and Carson City Host Lions Club generously donated vision screenings to support early detection of vision issues to nearly 2,000 students in the Carson City School District.
The screenings were conducted for all pre-kindergarten, first, third, sixth and ninth grade students in the district from Sept. 12, 2024, through Jan. 16, 2025.
“Studies show that up to 80% of learning is visual, making early detection and treatment of vision problems critical for student success,” said Sheila Story, chief nurse for the Carson City School District. “The initiative not only helped the district meet state vision screening requirements, but it also promoted a healthy learning environment and addressed potential vision-related challenges among students.”
The Lions Club has a long-standing reputation for supporting vision health through initiatives such as vision screenings, eyeglass recycling and access to affordable eye care. This school year, the vision screenings were also part of a larger national initiative spearheaded by LionsUSA, an affiliate of Lions International. Across the United States, Lions worked to preserve vision and improve eye health for children and adults alike.
The week, Jan. 13-16, holds special significance for Lions worldwide as it coincides with the birthday of Lions International Founder Melvin Jones on January 13, 1879. Jones, a visionary salesman from Chicago, founded Lions International more than a century ago, igniting a global service movement that now encompasses more than 1.4 million members in more than 200 countries.
