A 39-year-old man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of felony grand theft auto, possession of a stolen vehicle and other alleged offenses, according to a Carson City Sheriff’s Office booking report.

Following an investigation, CCSO deputies arrested Brett Davenport, listed as a Reno resident. He was also booked for suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, DUI drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the booking report, on Saturday at 12:14 a.m. deputies were dispatched to an accident on I-580 near the William Street off-ramp in the southbound travel lanes. Dispatch initially advised the on-scene witness stated they saw a man walking around the vehicle attempting to get debris out of the street and then saw the man start walking southbound on I-580 leaving the crash.

Deputies arrived and observed a vehicle crashed into the westside freeway divider wall. A deputy observed debris and personal items all over the road. The deputy searched the vehicle, attempting to locate an ID or some sort of identifying information for the driver but was unable to, the report states. However, during the search, the deputy located a black backpack and inside the front pocket was a clear bag with large shards of suspected methamphetamine, along with a used methamphetamine pipe and used hypodermic needles.

A deputy was on scene and advised Nevada State Police were on the way to handle the crash investigation. Dispatch then advised the vehicle had just been reported stolen. Once NHP arrived on scene, the deputy cleared the scene and began patrolling the area of a nearby casino. Due to the man mostly likely traveling on foot, the deputy assumed he would be at one of the nearest casinos, located roughly a half-mile from the vehicle’s crash site.

While patrolling the area, a deputy advised over the patrol radio that there was a citation in the back of the vehicle for a Brett Davenport. The deputy immediately started searching for a photo of the man in the local database, the report states. At this time, the deputy called another deputy who was handling the report for the stolen vehicle provided by the victim.

The deputy relayed that the victim and suspect used to be friends and that they had given him rides before. The victim stated the vehicle was stolen sometime during their shift at a casino in the 3700 bock of South Carson Street but that they were unaware when or who stole it. Due to the information, deputies continued to look for a male matching a photo of Davenport, the report states.

While patrolling the westside overflow parking lot of a casino, the deputy observed a male wearing blue jeans and black sweatshirt traveling on foot through the back parking lot. The man made eye contact with the deputy and appeared startled and frantic, the report states. When the man made eye contact, his eyes widened and he immediately put his head down and began walking at a noticeably fast pace, the report states.

The path he was traveling was not a normal path for someone to travel on foot. It appeared to the deputy as if he was attempting to conceal himself from law enforcement by traveling through the back lot, then attempting to go through the lot of a nearby closed business. Due to the circumstances, the deputy made contact with the man at the rear westside parking lot of the casino and neighboring business parking lot, the report states.

The deputy asked the man to come speak with him, which he complied. As the man approached, the deputy recognized him and Davenport, which he verbally confirmed his name. Due to the level of crime deputies were investigating, the officer initially advised that they were simply investigating a larceny in an attempt to keep him calm until a cover unit arrived, the report states.

A CCSO detective arrived on scene. The suspect was then advised officers were investigating a crash on I-580 involving a stolen vehicle. The man initially stated he was unaware of any stolen vehicle and that he was inside the casino for an hour playing casino games and prior to that he was in Reno.

The deputy asked the man if he used a player’s card, which he stated he did not. Minutes later, he admitted to the detective that he was the one driving the vehicle and that he thought a tire popped and caused him to lose control of the vehicle, causing him to crash and that he left the scene because he didn’t want to get in trouble for not having a valid driver’s license, the report states.

Due to narcotics located inside the vehicle, the man was read his Miranda warning, which he stated he understood. He admitted to smoking methamphetamine earlier in the day, however he denied using any substance after 10 p.m. The deputy asked if he would consent to field sobriety tests to confirm he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, which he consented. The deputy asked if they could search his person prior to conducting the tests, which he verbally consenting. While searching the man, deputies located a used methamphetamine pipe in his pants pocket, the report states.

The man showed signs of impairment on the tests. He consented to a preliminary PBT to confirm alcohol was not the chemical basis for impairment, with a result of .00, the report states. Due to the man’s admission of driving a stolen vehicle, crashing the vehicle, leaving the scene, illegal narcotics located in the vehicle, the man admitted to driving, and a methamphetamine pipe in his pocket, he was placed under arrest and arrested for suspicion of grand theft auto, possession of a stolen vehicle, DUI drugs, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He later admitted that the illegal narcotics inside the vehicle were his and that they were inside his dark colored backpack. He stated that the stolen vehicle was the victim’s and when he crashed he called them and advised her to the report it was stolen. However, the deputy was advised by the other deputy that they victim wanted to “recant” her statement and stated she filed a false report, the report states.

The man was read the informed consent admonishment, which includes a warning that their license will be revoked if they refuse testing. The man stated he understood and as willing to submit to evidentiary blood testing. Bail: $10,000.
