After a brief break from rain and snow, a series of winter storm systems will return to the Carson City region and Sierra this week, according to the National Weather Service.

The first storm is expected to arrive by Wednesday with increasing afternoon winds and evening. Wind gusts near 50 mph will be possible across the Sierra and far western Nevada with higher readings along wind prone locations and gusts over 100 mph over the Sierra crest.

A period of moderate snow is expected in the Sierra with up to a foot possible. Light to moderate rain in the valley most likely Wednesday night into Thursday.

Although no significant flooding impacts are expected, rises on small creeks and streams are still possible.

By Friday, another storm is projected to arrive with snow levels dropping to most valley floors, with snow possibly continuing into Saturday.

A potentially stronger storm may arrive by next Sunday and Monday. Snowfall totals of more than a foot are possible in the Sierra between Friday and Monday, with some accumulations down to valley floors, especially for Sunday and Monday. Wednesday will bring the warmer temperatures but the wind and rain with it. Highs will be in the upper 40s. Rain is likely Thursday and snow likely Friday with daytime highs in the mid 30s.
