There are no controls on local area highways and road ways for the Monday morning commute on this Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. However, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno is warning of black ice on roads at higher elevations.

Freezing fog has been forecast by the NWS for elevations between 5300 and 7000 feet elevation, the NWS reports, affecting the Lake Tahoe region, the Sierra Valleys and Virginia City around the local vicinity.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution in these areas, keeping an eye out for pogonip — or frost-covered foliage — along the road side as this may be a sign that moisture has also frozen to the road, the NWS reports.

The commute over Spooner Summit and along State Routes 28, 431 and 341 may be affected.

A seven mile stretch of Kingsbury Grade, or SR 207, remains closed for repairs.

Schools, government offices and other businesses are closed today in observance of the holiday.
