A light snow fell overnight Wednesday into Thursday in the Carson City area, and is still falling at this hour. About an inch of fresh, new snow has fallen in East Carson City near Empire Ranch.
Motorists can expect a slow, cautious commute Thursday morning as roads may be slippery from the new snow covering.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno forecasts a 90 percent chance of snow Thursday in Carson City with total accumulation of between two and four inches possible around the area.
Daytime high temperature is forecast to be right around the freezing mark (32 degrees).
Snow is expect to dissipate late Thursday to about a 60 percent chance, and continue decreased into Friday morning. Overnight low is forecast for around 19 degrees.
By daytime Friday, conditions are forecast to be partly cloudy with only a 30 percent chance of precipitation. Little to now accumulation is expected. The high Friday is forecast to around 34 degrees and an overnight low of 19.
On the roads and highways this morning, Interstate 580 has chains and snow tires required through Washoe Valley from the Carson County line to about the Bowers Mansion interchange. Old U.S. Highway 395 Alternate also has traction tires or devices required for the same area between county line to about Bowers Mansion.
Motorists heading up Carson Hill into Washoe Valley can expect slippery, hazardous roads and should drive with caution.
Chains and snow tires are required on U.S. 395 South through the Carson Valley. Expect a slow commute between Minden and Carson City.
Traction tires and devices are required on U.S. Highway 50 near Spooner Summit in Carson City, as well as in Douglas County from about milepost 9.5 to milepost 14.6 along the shore of Lake Tahoe.
Much of State Route 431, the Mount Rose Highway, remains closed Thursday for about 14 miles, from milepost 3 to milepost 17. It is estimated to remain around noon Friday.
Chains and snow tires are required on SR 341 into Virginia, including the first six miles up Geiger Grade and for about eight miles from Lyon into Store counties.
Traction tires and devices are required on SR 28 from U.S. Highway 50 at Spooner Summit to 11 miles into Washoe County at Incline Village.
