The currently vacant City Center/Carson Tahoe Hotel has been taken over by yet another new owner, with plans to turn it into apartments, and it now appears as if construction is starting up again after the previously planned renovations stalled and disappeared.
The motel, located at 800 N. Carson St., in Carson City was first constructed in 1966 and contained 89 rooms across four stories along with an indoor pool. It has operated as a Best Western, was taken over by the Carson Nugget, and in 2012, the building underwent an upgrade and its name was changed to the Carson Tahoe Hotel.

In 2022, the Carson Nugget sold the City Center to a developer duo, who said they planned to rebrand the hotel under a national franchise, though they did not specify which. They said it would only take a couple months to bring it online, but since then, the building has remained vacant and filled with trash.
However, there has been some recent movement on the property: some of the windows have been boarded up and a recent addition of a large chainlink fence indicates something has changed.
But the work was stopped as of Dec. 4, 2024, after a stop work order was issued because demolition was occurring within the building without a permit, according to the plan review.
A look at the property shows the reason why: a new owner has joined forces. Since 2021, the ownership of the property has changed hands at no cost within the Maffi family, including ownerships by Joe Maffi, Gregory Maffi, Terry Maffi, and Jennifer Bernard, but in November 2024, the property was sold for $3 million to the Capitol City Hotel NV, LLC.

The registered managing members of Capitol City Hotel NV, LLC., which was formed in November 2024, are Baldev Johal and Balbir Gosal. The two are connected to a number of other hotels and similar entities throughout the country including Silverdale Hotel Group, Boulder Hotel, Lakeside Plaza, Fernley Hotel, all within Nevada, the Coconut Grove Hotel in Florida, and other entities in Texas and California.
However, according to a submitted plan for a Major Project Review to Carson City, the plan isn’t to keep the building as a hotel, but rather, to convert it to multi-family apartments.
At this time, no other information about the plans is available, other than the fact that the city is undergoing a plan review for the property submitted by applicant Sean Lee.
We will update with new information as it becomes available.
