Heavenly Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe welcomed skiers and boarders to the slopes Wednesday morning with 11 inches of new snow on the ground, launching the 2019-20 winter season.

Beginning Thursday, Nov. 21, the Mexican Ditch Trail will be temporarily closed in the vicinity of the Mexican Dam for the installation of safety improvements, according to Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space.

Carson City Public Works announces temporary closure of Linear Ditch Trail

Temporary Closure of Linear Ditch Trail

Sections of the Linear Ditch Trail in Carson City will be closed starting Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2019, for maintenance and cleaning. The multiuse path will be closed from the east end of the Linear Ditch, east of Fremont Elementary School and continue west to South Roop Street along Governor’s Field. Maintenance is anticipated to take up to several weeks.

Bear looking for food shows up on Carson City's west side; NDOW to release back into wild

UPDATE: The 19-year-old bear captured Tuesday in Carson City by wildlife officials has died as a result of a brain tumor after he was tranquilized, with the intention of being released later into the wild, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife. With recent bear sightings around Carson City, including Tuesday morning off of Minnesota Street, it is a sure sign that fall has set in as the capital city area is seeing increased bear foraging activity, according to wildlife officials.

Forest Service seeks input for Winter Travel Management at Lake Tahoe

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has released the Proposed Action for the Winter Recreation and Over Snow Vehicle Travel Management Project. The Proposed Action was developed based on Forest Service criteria and feedback received from stakeholders during the Forest Plan Revision process, open house meetings and winter recreation collaborative meetings that occurred between 2011 and 2016.

New ‘Andersen Ranch’ housing development in west Carson City under review

There are several housing developments for Carson City currently in different stages of review, and one such development is the Andersen Ranch Development, named for the Andersen family who has farmed the Carson City region since the 1870s. This new development is not to be confused with Buzzy’s Ranch on the eastern side of Carson City, also named for the Andersen family.

UPDATE: There's a star party late Monday night into Tuesday morning hosted by Carson City Parks and Recreation and Open Space. For summer’s most visible meteor showers, join the Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space Department at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory for some late night, educational fun. No pre-registration necessary. Please wear close-toed shoes and bring water for night hiking from the Observatory. Head lamps and flashlights are allowed. Parking at the Observatory can be found at 2699 Vanpatten Ave, Carson City. Please call (775) 281-7711 with any questions. This upcoming Monday is the Aquariids Viewing Party starting at 12:00 a.m. Tuesday (technically Monday night).
