Heavenly Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe welcomed skiers and boarders to the slopes Wednesday morning with 11 inches of new snow on the ground, launching the 2019-20 winter season.

For the first time since the recession, the Ski Program offered by Carson City is back. The program ended around 2012, due to a low enrollment brought on by the recession. But now, Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space has partnered with Boreal Ski Resort to bring the program back.

Time for some Sunday holiday adventure. The Carson Nugget has something special tonight, a Van Halen Tribute Band plays two concerts in their upstairs ballroom. For a lazy afternoon in the shade, you’ll find live music on the porch of the Genoa Bar. The Tahoe Orchestra brings their annual 9/11 Memorial Concert to St. Gall’s Church in Gardnerville. It’s nice that the beginning of the school year is almost immediately rewarded with a three-day weekend. According to the calendar, summer is coming to a close but South Lake Tahoe is refusing to acknowledge it. Tahoe South will host a magnitude of events extending the season from Labor Day into October with entertainment, culinary festivals, music, outdoor recreation, competitions and a lakefront laser show.

Jamie Anderson of South Lake Tahoe is the winner of back-to-back Olympic gold medals, her latest at the 2018 Winter games in South Korea.

Five ski resorts in the United States are official training sites for the U.S. Ski & Snowboard team, and now for the next five years Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows is one of them.

Labor Day commemorates the men and women whose sweat made this such a great country and has been a national holiday since 1894. Celebrate this unofficial end-of-summer with a trip to the lake, a backyard bar-be-que, the parade in Virginia City, or one of the many fun events going on around town. MONDAY: Labor Day

The great thing about Labor Day weekend is that it just keeps going. The Best in the West Rib Cook-off offers up family fun, live music, and plenty of bar-be-qued delights all the way through Monday. For those with younger kids, consider a day at Mills Park. This is the last weekend for summertime train rides through the cottonwoods. Join Muscle Powered at Silver Saddle Ranch by the Carson River for a bike or hike this morning. Bring water and a camera, you never know what wildlife will make an appearance.

SUNDAY:

Summer is holding on for dear life, and sending a miniature heat wave our way for this long weekend. For those of you not in Black Rock City, the Carson City region offers plenty of recreation and entertainment. Downtown will be hopping with the Farmers Market, monthly Wine Walk, and this season’s last outdoor concert at the Brewery Arts Center – and that’s just Saturday! Keep reading for three days of good times.

SATURDAY:

Labor Day weekend usually signifies the end of summer. Give it one heck of a send-off: the downtown Carson wine walk, rib cook-off in Sparks, Virginia City's Civil War Days, and the Heavenly Days carnival, music festival and car show in South Lake Tahoe are but a few of your options. Tonight, Improv at the Brewery Arts Center will get the belly laughs going. Unwind with some live music at Living the Good Life or some karaoke at the Spoke Bar and Grill. Artisan Gail Rogers is the featured guest at tonight's Carson City Art Gallery reception.

FRIDAY:

The Silver State Vertical Drop is an annual ski competition and community fundraising event put on by the Silver State Hotshots, a Carson City-based wildfire suppression crew. Justin Cutler, the current captain of the Silver State Hotshots, began the event in 2008 and it has taken place each year, this year being the 9th consecutive.

Local Freshies, in association with 4Frnt Skis, will host a two-stop movie premiere of “Here and Now,” along with “Tahoe: The Daily Routine,” in partnership with Basecamp Hotel & Diamond Peak.

Something which might not draw a great deal of attention around CHS is the Senior Sunrise, because how many 17-year-olds want to get up even earlier in the morning than they already have to, especially on a Wednesday knowing full well they will not be able to run home first and shower before school begins. That would be crazy, right.

Reno-Tahoe International Airport will soon add Dallas Love Field in Texas to its air service roster during the coming ski and snowboard season. Southwest Airlines announced Thursday it will begin seasonal air service flying non-stop once a week to Dallas Love Field from Jan. 7 to March 4, 2017.

Olympic champion Jamie Anderson from South Lake Tahoe will be part of 20th Boarding for Breast Cancer Snowboard and Music Festival, Shredding the Love this Saturday at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort.

The inspiration behind B4BC was a young woman named Monica Steward, co-founder of Bonfire, who at was diagnosed with breast cancer the age of 26 and passed away in 1996 at the age of 29.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is asking for public comments on proposed improvements to the existing skiing and snowboarding terrain near the top of the gondola at Heavenly Mountain Resort.

The SnowGlobe Music Festival announced additional artists to its fifth anniversary countdown to New Year's lineup, held over three days in South Lake Tahoe, Dec. 29 to New Year's Eve.

Hosted in the heart of South Lake Tahoe, the high-energy hip hop and EDM music festival offers more than 50 world-class artists performing on multiple stages and culminating in an impressive firework show.

Lake Tahoe ski resorts Heavenly and Northstar will launch their 2015-16 ski and snowboard season this Saturday, six days ahead of schedule, thanks to recent winter storms. This is the earliest the resorts have opened since 2012, officials said.

Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort are accepting applications and will host job fairs in November.

The Lake Tahoe resorts, under parent company Vail Resorts, says it will, for the first time, hire teens 15 and over who wish to work on the mountain. Teens can apply for jobs such as cashiers, ski and snowboard school teachers’ assistants, guest services representatives, parking attendants, cleaning attendants, ticket sales and scanning.

The first official day of fall has come and went. Days are shorter and temperatures are cooler. Talk of a “Monster El Niño” has everyone stoked for winter. Thoughts of checking and tuning the gear begin to creep into our minds. Before each snow season there is one question we often forget to ask ourselves…are we physically ready? A lot of mountain enthusiasts attempt to keep in shape by hitting the trails, bike riding, paddle boarding or other adventurous outdoor activities, while others enjoy the off season in a different way.

Sierra-at-Tahoe will hold a candlelight vigil Wednesday for Michael Hallenbeck of Shingle Springs, Calif. The 21-year old U.S. Forest Service firefighter died Saturday fighting a lightning-caused fire south of Echo Summit.

Known by friends and family as Mikey, Hallenbeck was a Sierra-at-Tahoe employee for the past two seasons and a local firefighter.

Lake Tahoe SummerFest’s fourth season, “Passport to a World of Music,” will bring Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn to audiences July 31 – Aug. 16. The three weekend series of nine different concerts will transport attendees through masterpieces translated by renowned artists and a nationally acclaimed orchestra of 40 players.

Sierra-at-Tahoe is the latest Lake Tahoe area ski resort to announce that it will suspend operations, beginning Monday, because of the lack of snow brought on by the ongoing drought in the West.

South Lake Tahoe and Stateline have been picked as the host locations for the 2018 Mountain Travel Symposium, the largest gathering of alpine travel and tour professionals, ski clubs, lodging and property management companies in North America. It is the South Shore's first time to host the event.

Those who live in the Sierra Nevada already know about the minimal snowpack this winter. The monthly snow survey conducted Tuesday near Sierra-at-Tahoe ski resort showed just that. The water content of the snow for California is at 19 percent of the average for this time of year, with the central Sierra at 20 percent of average.
