Nevada Arts Council gives out $392,250 in CARES Act funds to arts groups statewide

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Arts Council has issued $392,250 in federal funds to 79 arts organizations through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Grant amounts ranged from $1,000 to $10,000, based on each group’s total annual revenue.

South Lake Tahoe closes El Dorado Beach boat ramp due to COVID-19 concerns

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Due to a recent spike in COVID-19 cases and a significant increase in visitation to the Lake Tahoe Basin over the last few weeks, the City of South Lake Tahoe has made the decision to close its boat ramp at El Dorado Beach to re-assess their operations there.

Team of scuba divers begin underwater cleanup efforts at Donner Lake

Colin West, executive director of Clean Up the Lake, a non-profit organization, along with three other scuba divers will be braving the cold water of Donner Lake in Truckee, Calif. for two weeks in an effort to fight trash pollution that began July 6.

Annual July 5 Tahoe beach cleanup nets 500 pounds of trash, 3,495 cigarette butts, 6,515 pieces of plastic

Despite COVID-19 keeping many from Tahoe beaches this season, somehow it didn’t seem to stop the trash from accumulating, but it also didn’t stop Keep Tahoe Blue volunteers from holding their annual beach cleanup.

According to the League to Save Lake Tahoe’s Communications Manager Chris Joseph, the beach clean up kept things smaller this year to make sure social distancing practices were upheld for the safety of volunteers.

Douglas authorities arrest 32 over holiday weekend between Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office arrested 9 people on July 4, 2020 between Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley. A total of 32 people, over the July 4 weekend, July 3-5, 2020, were arrested for various charges mostly related to offenses involving alcohol or drugs.

Obituary: Nellie Rosalyn Sherman

Nellie Rosalyn Midge Sherman (88) of Butte, Montana, a former Stateline resident, passed away in Great Falls, Montana, on June 30, 2020.

Rosalyn was born on March 11, 1932, at her family’s homestead on the Bootlegger Trail east of Ledger, Montana. She was the youngest of six children that were born to Robert and Myrtle Midge.

She was known as “Nellie” to many, but as “Rosalyn” to others.

Progress made on Monarch Fire east of Gardnerville; 70 percent contained, 2,330 acres

Sierra Front Team 1 and assigned units made good progress Saturday on the Monarch Fire burning in the Pine Nut Mountains east of Gardnerville, Nev. The Monarch Fire was reported at 12:41 p.m. on June 24, 2020, and is burning three miles south of Sierra Spirit Ranch in Douglas County.

Firefighters continue to battle Monarch Fire in Douglas, officials warn of flash flooding danger

UPDATE 3:39PM: The Monarch Fire is approximately 2,500 acres and currently 5 percent contained. No structures are immediately threatened at this time and the fire is believed to be lightning caused from the previous day. Responding agencies include East Fork, Central Lyon, North Lake Tahoe, North Lyon, Story County, Tahoe Douglas and Truckee Meadows Fire Protection Districts, Reno Fire Department, Bureau of Land Management, Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service.

As of 9:45 a.m. Thursday morning, the fire in the Pine Nuts in Douglas County, which has been named the Monarch Fire, now covers a total of 1,794 acres.

Multiple agencies are on scene to try and control the fire which is thought to have been caused by a lightning strike during yesterday’s thunderstorm.

5.8 magnitude earthquake near Lone Pine felt in South Lake Tahoe

Did you feel it? There was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake near Lone Pine and Owen's Lake at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday with reports of it being felt in South Lake Tahoe. It was followed by 3.7, 3.6 and 4.7 aftershocks in the first 19 minutes after the main event.
