It looks like winter driving conditions are finally here. We are expected to have blizzard like conditions in and around Carson City for the rest of the week. Carson City Sheriff’s Office encourages drivers to be responsible and exercise caution while driving.

With anywhere from a light dusting in the capital city to an inch or more from Reno into Washoe Valley, winter weather has arrived again, with a strong system shaping up to drop several feet of snow in the Sierra and several inches along the valley floors, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is joining forces with other Nevada law enforcement agencies now through January 25 to be on the lookout for distracted drivers.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office is joining forces to increase high-visibility patrols from June 26, through July 12, 2020, for motorists exceeding the speed limit.

Speed is a major contributing factor to driver, pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities, accounting for nearly one-third of all traffic deaths in Nevada. In 2018, there were 92 speeding-related fatalities on Nevada roadways.

UPDATE: Carson City Health and Human Services clarified one item in the resolution regarding the number of cases. Carson City health officials have identified 1 positive case and the potential exposure of 14 ship passengers who have been repatriated who are being tracked.

In the fall of 2018, the Carson City Board of Supervisors approved a plan submitted by Sheriff Furlong to fund a Traffic Enforcement Unit in the community. The Sheriff justified his proposal by evidence of rising accident rates and fatalities of both drivers and pedestrians in the area.

Law enforcement agencies statewide are joining forces and focusing on distracted drivers now through Jan. 24, 2020. The Nevada Highway Patrol will be working diligently to urge motorists to keep their eyes on the road and put away cell phones or other items that cause distractions.

There is no excuse for driving under the influence, make plans now and stay safe later. As Carson City residents make plans to celebrate the coming holidays, the Carson City Sheriffs Office and other Nevada law enforcement agencies ask that you make sure those plans include viable alternatives to driving under the influence.

The Carson City Sheriffs Office has received a grant in the amount of $38,000 from the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety to support law enforcement’s participation in the Joining Forces traffic safety campaigns during the coming year.

Nevada Highway Patrol reported a fatal head-on crash Saturday morning on Highway 95A and Lyon County MM 27 (Wabuska). Two fatalities were confirmed, and both lanes were shut down while the fatal team was enroute.

As of 9:05 a.m., all travel lanes opened.

The names of the deceased and circumstances of the deaths have not been released as of yet.
