Carson City residents file in to vote in today's General Election
With around 63 percent of Carson City's 26,000 voters taking care of business prior to today's General Election by showing up to the courthouse for early voting or casting their ballots by mail, voter turnout Tuesday has been a steady and even flow, election officials have observed.
There was an expected rush early when the polls opened, with 1,300 voters making it to the Carson City Community Center before 10 a.m., said Carson City Clerk-Recorder Alan Glover. Otherwise turnout has been as expected: No long waits. No crowding.
He expected that by the time polls close at 7 p.m. an additional 4,500 will have gone through the community center and as many through the Carson City Fairgrounds on Old Clear Creek Road. All things considered, for whatever noise, anger, animosity, arguments, and finger pointing that has gone on among campaigns locally and nationally, voters have behaved themselves today.
"There hasn't been any chicken costumes; no Grim Reapers saying 'it is the end of the world as we know it" kind of stuff. Yet. We're here until 7," said Glover.
Voters of all ages made it through today, going about their business and keeping their choices to themselves. Election workers helped people with the electronic voting machines. There was a couple partisan complaints about voting machines and conspiracy theories but nothing spectacular.
First time voter R.J. Thompson, 20, said it was time he did his civic duty and voted. He said he chose not to vote, though he was eligible, to vote in the 2008 midterm election because he didn't have a car at the time was was afraid if he registered he'd get called in for jury duty.
Thompson said he studied his voter guide and was glad he did because of all the issues and candidates. He said he registered as a Republican even though he considers himself "more Libertarian."
You can follow the election results tonight on Carson Now and at the Carson City Elections website here. Early and absentee voting numbers will be ready shortly after polls close at 7 p.m.
Nevada’s only official general election results reporting website, www.SilverStateElection.com, will post results of the 2012 general election after the polls close. The comprehensive reporting website, which has undergone a redesign to improve functionality and usability, enables the public to easily monitor the official results as reported by election officials statewide throughout the evening of the election. Official county vote tallies are first sent to the Secretary of State’s office in order to be compiled with statewide results.
The website features separate tabs for finding results for the U.S. President, U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, Statewide/Judicial, State Senate, State Assembly, and ballot questions. Seven key races of interest will be featured on the homepage – the U.S. President race; the U.S. Senate race; the U.S. House of Representatives, District 3 race; and the State Senate races for Districts 5, 6, 9 and 15.
The percentage of precincts reporting and up-to-the-minute voter turnout numbers are also available at the stroke of a key. The voter turnout feature allows users to pull up numbers from previous primary and general elections by county to compare to the 2012 turnout. Users also have multiple options for refreshing the site as general election results are reported.
As the state’s chief elections officer, Secretary of State Ross Miller reminds the public that www.SilverStateElection.com is the only place to find official statewide results for the general election and encourages interested citizens to become familiar with the site so they can quickly and easily get the information they want on election night. For a historical perspective, detailed results from previous elections going back to 1998 can be found under the “Election Center” tab on the Secretary of State’s website, www.nvsos.gov.
