Nevadans encouraged to participate in Thursday Great ShakeOut earthquake drill
Agencies and schools throughout Carson City will participate in an earthquake drill Thursday morning. Along with millions of people worldwide, Nevadans are encouraged to “Drop, Cover and Hold On” at 10:17 a.m. on Oct. 17 for the 2013 Great Nevada ShakeOut.
State agencies throughout the Carson City area, as well as the Public Health Preparedness Program of the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health, the Nevada Division of Emergency Management, and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources plan to participate in the earthquake drill.
The ShakeOut earthquake drill has been held on the 3rd Thursday of October since 2008. Everyone can participate: individuals, businesses, families, schools, etc. are all invited to register. Participating in the ShakeOut amounts to planning your drill, learning from the many ShakeOut.org resources, getting prepared, and actually simulating your response to the imaginary earthquake.
“It is important that families and organizations are prepared to survive and recover quickly from big earthquakes,” said Erin Seward, Public Health Preparedness program manager. “You can improve your survival odds significantly by knowing what to do whether you are at home, at work, travelling, shopping, or dining out. The ShakeOut is a great way to learn earthquake preparedness.”
“The Nevada Division of Emergency Management works closely with several state and federal partners to help educate all Nevada counties, communities, and citizens to prepare and plan ahead for an earthquake,” said Chris Smith, NDEM Chief. “Participate in this year’s exercise and gather useful preparedness tips and safety information for your family or organization. Embracing the easy steps offered will reduce the loss of life, minimize property damage and ensure peace of mind.”
Leading up to Thursday, the three state organizations are educating employees on what to do during an earthquake whether you are at home, at work, outdoors or out in public. Employees are also learning earthquake preparedness such as securing one’s home and workspace to make it free of items that could perilously fall or collapse.
