Motor Officer Challenge returns with action packed events Friday and Saturday at Mills Park
Motor officers from around the country return to Carson City this week to train and compete in the 13th annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge at Mills Park.
The event runs Thursday through Saturday at Mills Park with Thursday a practice day for the competitors. The big events that bring the most spectators and participants will be on Friday and Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and feature music, vendors, food, demonstrations and contests.
The training challenge, which is usually held in downtown Carson City was moved this year due to the downtown revitalization project.
Organizers are projecting at least 24 specialized law enforcement motorcycle riders to participate in the event, including two riders from San Jose who will attend on behalf of Michael J. Katherman, 34, an 11-year veteran of the San Jose Police Department. Katherman died June 14 in an on-duty traffic accident while assigned as a motor officer.
There will be a moment of silence and recognition of his service on Saturday, said Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Scott McDaniel.
As far as events, there will be plenty of training exercises and demonstrations among the motor patrol officers in between competitions. As for the big competition, Last Man Standing is the highlight of the event. Officers ride through difficult courses showing off the skills they have learned. That competition will be Saturday at around 3 p.m.
“It will definitely be an event worth seeing,” said McDaniel. “These guys are very skilled with what they do. Very impressive.”
For event listings, photos, video and demonstrations see the Carson City Motor Patrol Facebook page here and the events page here for Friday and here for Saturday.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Motor Unit has adopted Catmandu as this year’s 13th Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge (Black Cat 13) charity. The Motor Unit will be raising funds through t-shirt sales and donations at the event.
Also going on this weekend is the Rockabilly Riot, a car show that will features hundreds of "rat rod cars" described by Carson City Visitors Bureau Director Joel Dunn as "a four-day party wrapped around a car show and celebrating a culture.”
Distinguished as a custom car that exaggerates the hot rod style of the 40s through early 60s, it isn’t your average classic car show. There's even a Tattoo Expo. For a full list of events and how to enter, go to www.rockabillyriot.com.
Parking will be at the Carson City Community Center and at Carson High School. Parking isn't allowed in the park itself. McDaniel said motorists should be mindful of parking in residential areas and not block driveways. Parking is not allowed at the Carson City Library.
"With all the events going on this weekend, parking spaces are going to fill up fast the closer you get to Mills Park, so we're advising the high school area for parking as well," said McDaniel.
