Rockabilly Riot, cancer awareness fitness events, Dayton Valley Days and more: Carson City region set for jam-packed weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the Rockabilly Riot car show, Dayton Valley Days, a pancreatic cancer awareness walk at Silver Oak Golf Course, the annual Pooch Plunge at the Carson Aquatic Facility, horse endurance races in Virginia City, history talks at Mormon Station Park and much more!

Carson City Kiwanis is Serving Breakfast to Raise Money for Scholarships

Carson City Kiwanis is serving short stacks for a tall cause at the Carson City Applebee’s on Oct. 5, 2019 from 8 to 10 a.m. The entire proceeds of this event will support the Ralph Denny Memorial Scholarship that awards a one-time $750 scholarship to a local high school graduate each school year. Originally named the Carson City Kiwanis Annual Scholarship, it was renamed following the passing of long-time Kiwanis member, Ralph Denny.

Pumpkins + Bingo = PINGO!

Pumpkins plus Bingo = PINGO! Join us Saturday, Oct. 12 for two lively, all ages Bingo sessions to win pumpkins and more. The event is at Carson Valley United Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville.

The even features two sessions: 1 to 3 p.m. Doors open at noon, and the second session is 4 to 6 p.m., Doors open 3 p.m.

This is an all ages event, fun for all families and open to the public.

4-H fundraiser and homemade Dog Biscuit Bake Sale at Bensons Feed September 21

Annual 4-H fundraiser - The 4 Paws Dog Club of Carson City will be selling homemade dog biscuits in various sizes on Saturday, September 21, from 9:00 to noon, at Benson’s Feed, 2750 Highway 50 East. All proceeds from the bake sale will support this outstanding youth club.

Have fun with Improv! We will use games, team-building exercises and basic improvisational acting structures. No experience necessary. Students will gain confidence on stage, employ public speaking skills, think quickly on their feet and create fun scenes out of thin air. Dangberg Home Ranch Celtic Faire coming to Carson Valley on Saturday, Sept. 14

On Saturday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. the Dangberg Home Ranch Celtic Faire will be the final special event of the 2019 Dangberg Summer Festival. A celebration of the Irish, Scottish and Welsh people who helped to settle Carson Valley will offer a day filled with entertainment and activities for all ages.

Daniel S. Judd Joins Allison MacKenzie Law Firm

On August 12, 2019, Nevada native, Daniel S. Judd joined Allison MacKenzie Law Firm as a new associate attorney. Daniel will focus his practice on the areas of Family Law, Divorce, Guardianships and Estate Planning. He is a former law clerk for both Allison MacKenzie and the Honorable James T. Russell, District Court Judge of the First Judicial District Court in Carson City. Additionally, he served the community as a Deputy Sheriff in Carson City.

Local Youth Completes Endurance Ride

Riley McHenry a 14 year old Freshman at Sierra Lutheran High School completed the Western States Trail Ride or Tevis Cup on Sunday August 18 at 4:45 in the morning.

Vigil planned to recognize and prevent opioid overdose; training provided Thursday

The public is invited to a candlelight vigil Thursday at Bob McFadden Plaza in honor of International Overdose Awareness Day.

“The opioid epidemic is so huge, even in a town of our size,” said Samantha Szoyka, the youth program and outreach coordinator for Partnership Carson City. “As a community, we are starting to talk about it, but people still don’t know what resources are available to them or how they can connect with those resources.”

The vigil, which begins at 7 p.m., will feature a guest speaker and booths distributing information.

Wednesday events around Carson City feature Wheeled Food with movie at BAC, jazz and film festivals

We're heading into the midweek, Wednesday, August 21, 2019 with sunny skies and activities throughout the day including day 2 of the Jukebox International Film Festival at the Carson City Community Center, Jazz and Beyond festival performances to complement Wheeled Food Wednesday at the BAC followed by a classic outdoor movie to boot, "West Side Story." There's also a free creative event: "Community Art Card, Creating Social Circle" at Comma Coffee, Salsa dancing and more. Enjoy the day.

Having made it through the first day of school in Carson City, it is onward and upward as we head into Tuesday, August 20, 2019. Events around the area include fitness hikes and bike ride, a free floral design class at Silver City School House, art showings and Congressman Mark Amodei at Casino Fandango. Also featured is the launch of the Jukebox International Film Festival at the community center, a jazz quintet performance at Comma Courtyard and the 115th birthday celebration of Count Basie as part of the Jazz and Beyond music festival. Wreath ceremony for fallen Carson City law officers among events Thursday around town

Heading into Thursday, August 15, 2019 we can expect hot weather to continue with high temperatures near 100. Among events for the day, there will be a wreath remembrance ceremony for fallen Carson City law enforcement officers at the sheriff's office, a Muscle Powered morning hike, art showings, and a meeting of the Status of Women in Nevada group at the Carson Nugget. As part of the Jazz and Beyond music festival, there will be an outdoor "Woodstock Remembered" concert at Comma Coffee and a music presentation, "All About that Bass" by Scot Marshall and Friends at the Nevada State Museum.

There's a new group for writers that meets at the Brewery Arts Center; a salary negotiation workshop at WNC, a chautauqua and author presentations at Dangberg Historic Park. There's also the Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival that will feature the Wesley Orsolic Trio during Wheeled Food Wednesday at the BAC, with jams to continue at Living the Good Life; there's also a real estate workshop for veterans, art showings, salsa dancing and more. Carson City ESL program founder among 4 picked for prestigious Manhattan Institute award

A Carson City-based nonprofit that teaches the English language to those preparing for U.S. citizenship — and whose founder was recognized in December 2018 as a finalist for the CNN Hero Award — has been picked to receive a national recognition award from the prestigious Manhattan Institute.

2019 Carson City Fair and Demolition Derby aftermath brings donations

The 2019 Carson City Fair finished its third year on the last Sunday in July with a record number of participants, exhibits and spectators. The Fair’s claim to fame is a focus on local youth livestock shows and traditional exhibits. This year, most people didn’t miss the carnival, due to the free games provided on the grassy area.

It was gathering for the books and the sky. The Carson City Library concluded its Summer Learning Challenge on Saturday by throwing a party. The get-together celebrated youth participating in library activities that focused on space and science themes throughout summer.

American Red Cross Babysitting Certification

This American Red Cross Babysitter's Training Course will provide youth who are planning to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly care for children and infants. This training will help participants develop leadership skills, develop a babysitting business, keep themselves and others safe, understand children from ages 0 to 10, help children and infants with daily needs, help children with their behavior, and become fully certified in pediatric CPR and First Aid.

Youth Theatre Carson City to hold workshop, auditions for 'Shrek: The Musical, Jr.'
