Carson City Republican Women's Club will hold its first meeting of the year on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at Casino Fandango. The guest speaker is GOP Assemblywoman Dr. Robin Titus who will address the issues facing rural and urban Nevada as the remaining new laws that were passed in the last session go into effect.

A brothel protesting that the state has classified sex workers as its employees rather than as independent contractors — a change that could mean the brothel owes a large sum to the state’s unemployment insurance fund — is now arguing over public records before the Nevada Supreme Court.

Soroptimist International of Carson City is pleased to announce our “Women Helping Women” Honorees to be recognized for their dedication to improving the lives of women or girls in our community, at our inaugural “Celebrating Women Helping Women” event on Feb. 20, 2020 at the Carson Nugget, from 5:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday afternoon at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City, a celebration of the 150th year of the Nevada State Mint was held, with a presentation by Chautauquans Dave and Kathy Pierson, who portrayed Carson City founding father Abe Curry and his daughter, Elvira Curry Cowen.

The public is invited to attend the 20th Annual Feast of Chocolate on Saturday, February 8, 2020. This event is presented by the American Association of University Women, Capital (NV) Branch in Carson City.

The proceeds of this event provide scholarships to local women graduates or to women resuming their education at Western Nevada College as well as to the AAUW Education Opportunities Fund.

The Misfits Theater Group in Dayton is holding auditions for its Spring melodrama “Showdown at Phingerdoo or Bad Day at Dead Frog Flats” on Sunday, January 26 at 6 p.m. at the Dayton Library, 321 Dayton Valley Rd, Dayton. This old-time melodrama directed by Andra Woolman is set in the Wild West and has a cast of eight (8) men and five (5) women. Carson City Soroptimist will present the Live Your Dream Award, five scholarships, and recognize four Girls of the Month during its January program meeting. The meeting is open to the public, with prior reservations required. It will be Wednesday, Jan. 22, noon to 1 p.m., at Glen Eagles Restaurant.

Heading into midweek, the weather is expected to make an abrupt change with snow showers possible down to the valley floor late Wednesday night into Thursday. The Carson City Council of the Navy League of the United States, will be sponsoring a special event on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020 to honor the 2019 Sailors and Marines of the Year assigned to Naval Air Station Fallon and Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center, along with the Recruiter of the Year from Naval Recruiting District, Portland, assigned to the Reno Office.

Soroptimist International of Carson City is asking the public to nominate women for its annual “Women Helping Women” Ruby Award. The Soroptimist Ruby Award honors women who, through their professional or personal efforts, are making extraordinary differences in the lives of women or girls.

A 12-week public workshop called Seeking Safety meet Wednesdays beginning Jan. 8, 2020 through March 25.
Seeking Safety is an evidence-based curriculum gained at helping women develop skills to keep themselves out of unsafe relationships and avoid self-abuse of drugs or alcohol.

A Christmas gift of $2,500 was presented Tuesday to Carson City's Advocates to End Domestic Violence by Greater Nevada Credit Union. The donation is to help assist victims of domestic battery in the community.

The Red Hat Society delivered warm bedding and clothing to each of the residents at Richards Crossing in Carson City last week. A local chapter of the Red Hat Society named the “Classy Sassy Bear Ladies” organized a Christmas gift giveaway for the residents. The giveaway, for which planning started over the summer, collected homemade and donated blankets, scarves and socks.

Members of the Nevada Commission for Women, joined Gov. Carson City was awarded a historic landmark suffrage marker honoring Felice Cohn, a Carson City native who made significant contributions to women’s rights in Nevada. The unveiling of the historic landmark is scheduled for Dec. 10, 2019 at 1 p.m. The landmark will be unveiled in front of the Legislature, adjacent to Carson St. near the crosswalk to McFadden Plaza, previously known as 3rd St.

The sixth annual Thanksgiving Day Carson City Turkey Trot is an event the entire family will enjoy and, for many families, it has become as much of a Thanksgiving Day tradition as the big meal itself.

Partly sunny skies and cool temperatures are expected Thursday with a warmup in time for the weekend.
