NDOT to roll out safety signs, signals in 2020

CARSON CITY — As northern Nevada ushers in a new year, the Nevada Department of Transportation will be rolling out new sign and signal systems as part of transportation advances to help keep drivers safer in 2020.

There's a break ahead from significant storms across Carson City, western Nevada and Sierra, though the fog may return to the valley floors Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

End of an Era: Creator and founder of Downtown Carson City Santa Parade retires

For 20 years I have been bringing Christmas events to Downtown Carson City, beginning in 2000 when I had my retail store on Telegraph Square with Santa and his real reindeer. The Santa Parade was created in 2007 and was always the Saturday after the Silver and Snowflake festival originating at Telegraph Square to bring awareness to the existing businesses in the area.

JoAnne Skelly column: Good tools make a fall cleanup easier


On and off, on off. That’s what I keep doing with our irrigation and hoses as the daytime temperatures stay warm, but with nighttime temperatures below freezing. On, water; off, open spigots and hoses and drain them. While this is tedious, I am enjoying the beautiful weather.

A Successful Reseeding of the Little Valley Fire Burn Scar

Wednesday’s public reseeding of the Little Valley Fire burn scar, hosted by Sugar Pine Foundation and Patagonia, was a huge success. Over 60 volunteers showed up on the sunny morning to do their part in seeing the steep Washoe Valley mountainside just West of Franktown Road return from the ashes. 

Carson City deputies arrest man for suspicion of felony domestic battery

A 35-year-old Washoe Valley man was arrested early Saturday morning for suspicion of felony domestic battery third offense and an outside agency warrant, a Carson City sheriff's deputy report states.

Man booked on felony charges after leading deputies on chase, claims he's escaped police three times before

After leading deputies from multiple agencies on a chase through Carson City and into Washoe Valley Friday evening, a 26-year-old Carson City man was arrested at gun point after crashing a vehicle and running across the I-580 on foot.

Carson City vehicle pursuit leads to crash, foot chase after attempted felony warrant stop

What began as an attempt to serve a felony warrant out of Sacramento led to a high-speed police chase involving multiple jurisdictions Friday night, culminating in a single vehicle crash on Old 395 near the I-580 exit.

Just after 5 p.m. Carson City deputies attempted to pull over a silver 4-door Nissan SUV near Goni and Arrowhead, according to dispatch, in connection with a felony warrant out of Sacramento.

Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest to begin pile burning in Douglas, Washoe counties

As part of Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s hazardous fuels reduction efforts, both Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts’ fire crews will conduct pile burning beginning in October 2019 through May 2020, weather and fuel conditions permitting.

Carson City Fire Department and Truckee Meadows Fire responded Wednesday afternoon to a brush fire in the area of Pintail Way and Drake Way in Washoe Valley.

Nevadans take home 1,517 cats and dogs during Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days

More than 50 animal shelters and rescue groups participated in Nevada’s large free pet adoption event, Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days. It was organized by Maddie's Pet Project in Nevada, a three-year campaign aimed at helping more homeless cats and dogs find good homes and creating a safety net for pets by improving access to veterinary care in the Silver State.

About this time of year, I find my interest in gardening waning a bit. For one thing, it’s hot. For another, it’s already September and the first frost may not be far off, so why bother. In years past, I reminded people to expect the first frost around September 15 in most areas.
