CARSON CITY — Governor Brian Sandoval announced Thursday he has appointed Paul Nicks as Acting Director of the Governor’s Finance Office. Nicks will replace Jim Wells, who is retiring from state service on July 13.

CARSON CITY — Anna Camp’s lifelong interest in Native American culture started when she was 7 and had a “museum day” with her second-grade class from Quincy Elementary School.

The CHS Class of 2018 is going to step onto the football field as a group of students without a diploma and step off the football field as high school graduates with a diploma and a new wilderness in front of them.

Mark William Yenter, recently retired deputy commanding general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Carson City resident, died May 25, 2018. He was 60 years old.

A funeral service will be held for Maj. Gen. Yenter at the First Presbyterian Church in Carson City at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2, with interment to follow at Lone Mountain Cemetery here. He will receive full military honors.

A new scholarship through the Western Nevada College Foundation honors the memory of Michael Albert Dugan. The Mike Dugan Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a Fallon, Churchill County or rural student to be used toward materials for online or Fallon campus classes.

RENO — In addition to navigating pristine wild rivers and dirt roads, big-fish wrangler Zeb Hogan of Nat Geo WILD’s “Monster Fish” show also had to navigate a maze of dangerous military zones in order to tell the story of his travel and research in the remote and wild Salween River that runs through China, Thailand and Myanmar.

Carson High School students Kalysta Branco, Sara Knight, Catheryn Linkul, Jessica Preston and Jenaya Meyer along with Carson City resident Autumn Cuellar were each recently awarded a $2,000 scholarship from Greater Nevada Credit Union.

Muscle Powered: Citizens for a Walkable and Bikeable Carson City announced the “No Zombie Texting” award winners May 16 at The Brewery Arts Center, showcasing winning videos so the public could see the creative endeavors of young video artists from the community.

Sofia Valenzuela hasn’t been afraid of change and crossing gender norms during her college education.
Valenzuela started as a civil engineer major at the University of Nevada, Reno, then transferred to Western Nevada College to pursue a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Construction Management.

CARSON CITY — Hannah Golik, a graduating senior at Carson High School, has been named one of 630 semifinalists in the 2018 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The semifinalists were selected from nearly 5,300 candidates expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2018.

The public is invited to attend the next Foster Parent Information Night Panel in Carson City scheduled for Tuesday, May 15 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Carson City Library, 900 North Roop Street.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — As part of Nevada’s celebration of Historic Preservation and Archaeological Awareness Month, there are dozens of May events and displays throughout the state. Among them is a display created by archaeologist Robert Elston that illustrates progress on a multi-year archaeological project funded through a National Science Foundation grant.

The University of Nevada, Reno’s 128th Commencement will confer 3,137 degrees, the largest amount of degrees conferred in one semester. The commencement exercises will take place over four ceremonies in three days:

RENO — Combined accelerated bridge construction methods were proved safe and ready for real-world application following tests using massive shake tables in the University of Nevada, Reno’s world-renowned Earthquake Engineering Laboratory.

CARSON CITY — Fifteen juniors and seniors from Carson High School were honored at Nevada Governor’s Mansion last night for their efforts in a university level introductory education course. In partnership with the University of Nevada, Reno, Carson High School offered the inaugural EDU 110 course for students interested in pursuing a teaching career.

Booker T. Washington said, “Excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way.” Taking a different approach to education is Pioneer High School’s specialty. Because of their innovative solutions, members of Pioneer’s Carson City staff were selected to participate in the 2018 Nevada Department of Education Mega Conference.

Engrid Barnett is an award-winning researcher, author, educator, and musician. She received a doctoral degree in geography from the University of Nevada, Reno, for her work on the unlikely but, nonetheless, strong influence of Virginia City on the 1960s psychedelic esthetic and cultural scene that would take San Francisco by storm in 1967.
