CARSON CITY – Nevada ranks 40^th among the states for the amount of energy consumed per person, according to the nonprofit website EnergyTrends.org.

The state rankings were released on Wednesday and show Nevadans consumed 239 million Btu per capita in 2010 compared to 303 Btu per capita in 2007.

A Face in the Crowd, a film debuting Andy Griffith in his first major role, will be presented at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 1st, at the Carson City Library.

The film will be hosted by former state archivist Guy Rocha and Reno News and Review editor Dennis Myers. The movie was directed and produced in 1957 by Elia Kazan, and written by Budd Schulberg. This film, which launched Griffith into stardom in the lead role as Larry “Lonesome” Rhodes, also stars actors Patricia Neal, Anthony Franciosa, Walter Matthau, and Lee Remick.

Explore the World @ Your Library: Serbia

CARSON CITY, NEVADA-Carson City Library will present Explore Serbia @ Your Library on Thursday, July 26th, at 6:00 p.m., in the library auditorium. Dragan Zivkovic will present this program. Having been born in Serbia, Zivkovic will share his unique understanding of his native country.

Carson City, NV—Another Carson Nugget event will help bring the Vietnam Vets Traveling Memorial Wall to Carson City this fall.

During the entire month of June, the casino held a slot event to support this worthy cause. Today, the casino presented a check from the event to the Vietnam Veterans of America, Carson Area Chapter 388. Today’s check brings the total amount donated to this cause from the Carson Nugget to $2,000, which is just under a quarter of the group’s entire goal.

Wilbur Lane came into the world July 4, 1921 and is one of a handful of remaining World War II veterans who served on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, which entered the war Dec.7, 1941 when her planes found the Japanese squadrons attacking Pearl Harbor.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval said today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the Arizona immigration law case points out the need for Congress and the president to come together and reform the country’s immigration laws.

The Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation announced that the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Elko Boys & Girls Club (Elko, Nev.) will both receive a $10,000 start-up grant to implement Triple Play programming. Additionally, Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows (Reno, Nev.) and Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada (Carson, Nev.) will receive $5,000 Triple Play Healthy Habits grants to provide programming focused on teaching the importance of healthy eating habits and being physically active.

One of the biggest, once-in-a-lifetime thrills this writer experienced was first-time voting eligibility in local, state and national elections. CARSON CITY – A new national survey of 6,000 small businesses has generated mixed ratings for Nevada, with high marks for its regulations and tax code but also showing one of the least healthy climates overall among the states.

The University of Nevada, Reno’s Sudeep Chandra, a leading Lake Tahoe scientist who has studied invasive species and limnology at the lake for 20 years, said issuing permits for commercial harvesting of crayfish at Lake Tahoe will help improve clarity at the pristine lake, as well as take away a food source for other invasive species that threaten lake clarity and ecosystems.

U.S. Bank partners with Junior Achievement to bring day-long program to all students at Jacks Valley Elementary School

WHAT: All students at Jacks Valley Elementary School will participate in “JA in a Day” presented by Junior Achievement of Northern Nevada and U.S. Bank. Students will be taught curriculum based on financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness from U.S. Bank, Douglas County Sherriff’s Department and parent volunteers.

WHEN: Tuesday, May 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

On Friday there is a unique way to remember and honor area veterans this Memorial Day weekend. The Carson Nugget is sponsoring a Bingo event on Friday, May 25 beginning at 7 p.m. in the Sierra Room.

The profits from the event will be donated to the Vietnam Veterans of America, Carson Area Chapter 388. The group is hoping to raise $10,000 to bring the Traveling Vietnam Wall tribute to Mills Park for the inaugural celebration of “Battle Born Days” in Carson City in October.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval and Japanese Consul General Hiroshi Inomata participated in a cherry tree planting ceremony today on the state Capitol grounds.

The trees were donated to the state to commemorate the 100^th anniversary of the planting of cherry trees in Washington, DC, that were donated by the people of Japan as a sign of friendship. The 3,020 cherry trees were presented to the people of the United States and were accepted by President William Howard Taft.

Celebrating National Train Day, the Nevada State Railroad Museum’s historic 1910 McKeen motor car will ride the rails from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 12 in Carson City.

Now a stellar attraction for rail enthusiasts and family fun, the McKeen Motor car operated from 1910 to 1945 racking up more than a half-million miles between Reno and Minden. The prestigious car became a diner and an office but was rescued by the museum when it was donated by the Bernhard family of Carson City in 1995.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval today announced he has signed an executive order providing reciprocity for military spouses seeking professional licensure in Nevada. The order is effective immediately.

CARSON CITY – The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles has approved Google’s license application to test autonomous vehicles on Nevada public roads.

It is the first license issued in the United States under new laws and regulations that put Nevada at the forefront of autonomous vehicle development.

CHARRISON DAVID ASHTON, known to many family and friends as Davey, was born March 10, 1939, to James David Ashton and Nellie Margaret “Margie” Charrison in Pasadena, California. The Ashton’s moved to Kings Beach, California in 1944. After graduating from Tahoe Truckee High School in 1957 he enlisted in the United States Navy serving one term touring the Pacific.

This drama was written by the German playwright Bertold Brecht in 1939 when Brecht lived in exile in the United States.
