Heading into the backend of the work week, events lined up Thursday include day 1 of the 7th annual International Film Festival at the Carson City Community Center, a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, a free information session on the legal and financial aspects of long-term care hosted by Carson Tahoe Care Center, the Carson City GOP will host a meeting to discuss precinct organization, plus trivia night at Bella Vita Bistro, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike and a lecture on women’s suffrage movement history in Nevada. All are invited to attend three days and nights of free film showings at the 7th annual Carson City International Film Festival, which runs Thursday through Saturday.

Somebody simply must stop the bleed, and Sierra Lutheran High School is responding to that challenge. Recently, the faculty and staff of the Christian college prep high school in Carson City became the first schoolwide staff in Douglas County to take part in the national bleed kit training being promoted by The National Stop the Bleed Campaign.

Each year, National Read Across America Day is observed on March 2, the birthday of children’s book author Ted Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss. In celebration, many schools often dedicate an entire week as “Reading Week.” In Carson City, grade-schoolers at Fremont Elementary School got to celebrate a week prior to the observance with several community partners and local dignitaries, who visited classrooms to read to students.

Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada and Girl Scouts of the USA will celebrate National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend Feb. 28 through March 1. The annual occasion honors the achievements of young entrepreneurs across the U.S. and in northern Nevada — Girl Scouts who run successful cookie booth and door-to-door cookie sales as well as market their businesses online using the Digital Cookie platform.

The first European to see America, so far as we know, was a Norseman named Barney, somewhere around A.D. 986. Barney was wading ashore, holding his shoes, when he encountered some Native Americans who were not in a good humor that particular morning, and they gave Barney the bum's rush. Carson City Health and Human Services is closely monitoring the current outbreak of a new 2019 Novel Coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, China. To date, there are no confirmed or suspected cases of Coronavirus in Nevada.

Obstacles are nothing new for Carson City native Rebecca Ostrander.

Ostrander, 21, suffered a brain tumor shortly after her 18th birthday. She was forced to spend most of her senior year of high school in hospitals and physical therapy recovery centers.

It is one thing to study history; it is another witness it. Visitors to the Nevada State Museum in Carson City this Tuesday, Feb. 4, will find themselves in history’s front row as the museum celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint. Just as it did 150 years earlier to the day, the Mint’s Coin Press No. 1 will be pressing silver coins, complete with the famous “CC” mint mark.

The CHS, NJROTC Orienteers competed in a weekend long orienteering festival in Anza Borrego State Park, Calif., Jan. 17-18. During the festival, team members competed in three different races over the two days.

The first Board of Supervisors meeting of February will take place on Feb. 6 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center located at 851 E. William Street.

With a Polynesian background, he has adapted to all styles and types of comedy.

The University of Nevada, Reno’s Camp Kesem club has been chosen as one of 12 colleges and universities from across the United States to compete to be one out of five schools to be chosen to start a new Camp Kesem chapter in their local area. Camp Kesem is a nationally recognized organization that helps family affected by cancer.

CARSON CITY — On Wednesday the Southern Nevada Health District reported the first person under investigation in Nevada for the 2019 novel coronavirus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will be testing samples from the Southern Nevada resident who has been identified as a person under investigation. Currently, Nevada has no confirmed cases of novel coronavirus.

Carson High School Senior Cade Crookshanks, 17, has been selected by the Nevada Section of the Society for Range Management to participate in the High School Youth Forum, a SRM sponsored youth activity held jointly during the 73 Annual SRM meeting. United States Marine Corps Captain (retired), Robert Paul Pier (Bob) left this life for eternity on Jan. 8, 2020 to be reunited with his Creator and his waiting wife, Ruth Jane Pier. Bob was born on August 10, 1931 in South Bend, Indiana as the youngest of nine children, Bob was 88 years old.

The U.S. Marshals Service, assisted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, arrested an El Salvador man Wednesday in Carson City who was wanted for allegedly being part of a terrorist organization.

Rene Antonio “Scrapy” Hernandez-Mejia, a Salvadorian national, was arrested in Carson City. According to Interpol, they issued a Red Notice indicating Hernandez-Mejia was wanted out of El Salvador for being part of a terrorist organization, according to a U.S. Marshals news release.
