The ESL In-Home Program's mission is to help non-English speaking residents in Northern Nevada to succeed by educating them to become more productive members in their communities.The only way to create a truly literate world is to include goals associated with underserved adult students and the literacy programs that serve them. Therefore, we teach Adults - parents and grandparents of ESL school children.

Senator Square: Carson High celebrates 20th annual Holiday Craft Fair this weekend

Carson High’s 20th annual Holiday Craft Fair is Friday, Nov. 21 from 5 to 8p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will be the best one yet with lots of new vendors as well as all your favorites. Come spend some time – great food, entertainment, a raffle, Santa, book sale, and of course, amazing and unique gifts for everyone. Admission for adults on Friday evening is only $2 and includes a raffle ticket as well as re-entry privileges on Saturday.

Senator Square: Carson High senior Caden Lehman wins national rodeo event

Caden Lehman, a senior at Carson High School, an officer for the Capitol FFA program, and an officer in the Douglas-Carson High School Rodeo Club, recently had his biggest win doing what he loves. He is involved in Team Roping and Calf Roping and is a member of the American Cowboys Team Roping Association. 

Recently at the ACTRA National Finals in Reno at the Livestock Events Center, Caden won the Super 7 National Championship, landing him and his partner, Jack Curry of Gardnerville, each new Royal T 3-horse trailers, buckles, and $10,000 cash. 

Learn How to Teach Basic English to Adults on a One-to-One Basis

The English-as-a-Second-Language In-Home Program hosts a free tutor training workshop, 12:30-2:00 on Saturday, October 11 at Partnership Carson City, 1711 N. Roop (corner of Roop and Beverly). Light snacks will be served. Join community volunteer tutors and learn how to teach basic English to adults on a one-to-one basis. There are more than 100 adults in Carson City and surrounding communities who are eager to learn to speak, read and write English. Instructional materials and training are provided at no charge by the ESL In-Home Program. Neither experience nor foreign language is necessary.

Western Nevada College opens Carson City Student Veterans Resource Center

The student veterans group of Western Nevada College celebrated the opening of the Western Nevada College Student Veterans Resource Center on Thursday, Oct. 31, 1-3 p.m., at the Carson City campus.

The four-room center located in the Cedar Building is the only one of its kind in Northern Nevada. It offers counseling services, student staff, access to VA benefit/medical information, and a study/tutor area with Internet access. The center is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Friday.

Student vets to celebrate new Carson City campus home at Western Nevada College

In August, Western Nevada College received recognition for its work with veterans, applauded at a national conference attended by President Barack Obama. Just two months later, WNC has continued its multi-faceted support of veterans as they make the transition from serving their country to a life focused on academics and career preparation.

The student veterans group of WNC will celebrate the opening of the Western Nevada College Student Veterans Resource Center on Thursday, Oct. 31, 1-3 p.m., at the Carson City campus.

Students, faculty honored at WNC awards banquet

Outstanding Western Nevada College students and faculty have been honored for outstanding scholarship and teaching during the 2012-2013 academic year.

Awards were presented to students for academic excellence, tutoring, peer mentorship, athletics, those in the Latino cohort and in student government, as well as to faculty for outstanding teaching and service during the 2012-13 academic year.

Faculty of the Year honors went to Mathematics Professor Michael Hardie, Ed.D. and English instructor Ryan Stryffeler, Ph.D.

Carson City Emblem Club hosts March 16 St. Patrick's Day Dinner

The Carson City Emblem Club #507 will hold its annual St. Patrick's Day Dinner on Saturday, March 16 at the Elks Lodge, 515 North Nevada Street in Carson City.

Movie Review: 'Beastly' is likable modern day spin on popular fairy tale

The film "Beastly," currently playing at the Casino Fadango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City is a modern version of the fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast." It's set in a high school context with Vanessa Hudgens a Lindy Taylor (the Beauty) and Alex Pettyfer (the Beast).
