The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has begun closing recreational facilities for the winter season. Seasonal closures apply to many National Forest recreation sites in the Tahoe Basin including beaches, campgrounds, picnic areas and forest roads.

Nevada residents and visitors are invited to celebrate Nevada Public Lands Day this Saturday, Sept. 26 with a “fee-free” day at Nevada’s State Parks. Park fees, including entrance, camping (Saturday night) and boating, where applicable, will be waived at state parks throughout Nevada.

National Forest trails, trailheads, beaches and other day-use areas in the Lake Tahoe Basin have now reopened for day-use only as of Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020. Camping and overnight stays will not be permitted, and campgrounds will remain closed. Resorts will reopen for day-use only. Emergency Fire Restrictions will remain in effect through Nov. 30. The July 4 holiday weekend at Lake Tahoe will look and feel different this year with basin firework shows canceled and social distancing safety practices required on beaches, campgrounds and along hiking trails. Even with the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Forest Service says it is hopeful the holiday period will be a great opportunity for people to get outside to celebrate Independence Day and all the wonders of Lake Tahoe.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office is investigating several vehicle burglaries and credit card thefts that happened this month in the Timberline area and is reminding all residents to keep their vehicle doors locked overnight.

Two California residents were arrested Sunday in connection to multiple vehicle burglaries at trailheads in the Carson Valley area and at Lake Tahoe, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office reports Tuesday.

With the Memorial Day weekend approaching, it is critical for everyone to practice responsible recreation to protect themselves and others in accordance with Gov. Sisolak’s Stay Safe to Stay Open initiative.

Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe is reopening over the Memorial Day weekend and having a four-day locals-emphasis celebration after being closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The event has been scaled back from previous years as city and state officials grapple with phase 2 reopening, which allows second-home property owners living outside the area to return to the California side of South Lake Tahoe, but not allowing for non-essential travel and visitors.

The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest will not open its campgrounds, group day use sites, and visitor centers in Nevada over the Memorial Day weekend. At this time, these same facilities are closed on the California portion of the Forest, but this could change based on state and county reopening plans.

To protect the health and safety of park visitors and staff amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Cathedral Gorge State Park, including Miller Point, will be fully closed, effective April 16, until further notice. The park will be closed to the public for all activities, including camping and day-use.

In light of current directives from the Governor related to health concerns, many facilities are closed, leaving few options for exercise and recreation. The Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space Department reports that an unprecedented number of people are utilizing Carson City’s more than 8,000 acres of parks, trails and open space. Trailhead parking in some locations is over capacity.

The Waterfall trailhead on Kings Canyon Road is experiencing especially large numbers of visitors, resulting in traffic congestion and parking related issues.

The Andersen Ranch Estates Subdivision will be one topic of discussion at the upcoming Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting tomorrow, Thursday Jan. 16.

The proposed development plan for the new subdivision was approved at the December planning commission meeting, during which the commission recommended approval of the project map with a 4-2 vote, with one vote absent.

CARSON CITY — In the midst of Tahoe’s busy summer tourism season, the Nevada Department of Transportation is offering reminders for convenient and safe access to outdoor recreation and businesses within the State Route 28 Shared Use Path and Safety, Stormwater Enhancements construction zone.

As part of the Carson Ranger District’s Hazardous Fuels Reduction Program on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, sheep will be released to graze on two separate fuel reduction project areas. These sheep will help remove cheatgrass and other non-native vegetation from National Forest System (NFS) lands.

UPDATE WEDNESDAY 11:50AM: The Whites Fire remains at 60 acres and 20 percent containment. The fire is southwest of Reno on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Carson Ranger District near the Whites Creek Trailhead just north of Whites Creek. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

UPDATE 6:12PM: A 60-acre fire is actively burning on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Carson Ranger District, near the Whites Creek Trailhead, south west of Reno. Eight structures in the Logan Meadows area may be threatened. Traffic is closed to Timberline Drive, except for local residents. There is no access to the Thomas Creek and Whites Creek Trailheads.
