Lawmakers ended the second special session of the summer shortly after midnight on Wednesday after passing a heavily lobbied bill that shields many businesses from COVID-19-related lawsuits but ultimately exempted school districts, hospitals and other health care facilities from receiving the additional protections.

CARSON CITY — On Monday, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak signed into law the final bills of the 31st Special Session of the Nevada Legislature.

The Jazz & Beyond festival committee is rescheduling many of the events originally planned for August 2020 because of the recent rise in coronavirus cases. However, the committee plans to go ahead with the second annual Open Studios Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, and Sunday, August 23. Admission is free.

RENO, Nev. Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe is reopening over the Memorial Day weekend and having a four-day locals-emphasis celebration after being closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. The event has been scaled back from previous years as city and state officials grapple with phase 2 reopening, which allows second-home property owners living outside the area to return to the California side of South Lake Tahoe, but not allowing for non-essential travel and visitors.

In a surreal twist, February gaming revenue at Carson City area casinos soared by more than 17 percent, while south shore Lake Tahoe was up 21 percent, and Reno up by 30 percent over February 2019 gaming revenue, a month before the coronavirus pandemic threat began to surface in the Silver State.

CARSON CITY — What started in September with a field of more than 4,400 Nevada High School students has been narrowed to the final six who will compete Saturday, March 14, for the title of Nevada Poetry Out Loud Champion.

CARSON CITY — Megg Mueller, Nevada Magazine’s managing editor, will step into the new role of executive editor this month. She assumed leadership of the publication after the March 6 retirement of publisher Janet Geary, who ran the magazine for the past 12 years. Nevada Magazine, which dates back to the 1930s, is a division of the Nevada Division of Tourism (Travel Nevada), part of the Nevada Division of Tourism and Cultural Affairs.
