Outdoors with Don Q: Escaping Carson City in the wintertime

For the last several years, Elaine and I have fled Carson City for a short time in the month of February to escape the seemingly, unending cold, snow and ice of our area in the wintertime.
This year is no exception.
The rental home:
In January, Elaine got busy on the Internet and at www.vrbo.com (Vacation Rental By Owner), she found the perfect hideaway location in Indio, California at a rental home for the period of time February 09-20.

Tubeless Tire Maintenance

If you’re new to tubeless bicycle tires, you may not be aware that they need periodic maintenance. Although a tire may continue to hold air indefinitely, flat protection can diminish after just a few months as the sealant drys up. In addition to adding fresh sealant, it’s best to remove the old sealant for best performance. The old sealant can pool and stick to a specific location in the tire, or form into strange rubber crystals. If not removed, the dried sealant adds excess rotating mass to the tire, and can throw the wheel out of balance.

Back in the Saddle

Today was my first bicycle ride since my shoulder surgery back in early November. This has been the longest period of being off my bike in more than a decade, time enough away that riding seemed foreign and unfamiliar.  The cold weather and icy streets didn’t exactly keep me longing for two-wheeled travel either. But after nearly three months of healing and physical therapy, and with temperatures breaking 40 degrees, I decided today was the day to get back in the saddle.

Auto Racing Wrapup

If there is such thing as an Easter Bunny naughty list, I’m pretty sure that David Reutimann will find his Easter basket full of rotten eggs tomorrow morning. He is definitely on Hendrick Motorsports’ bad list after ruining an almost certain 200th win and a probable 1-2-3 finish for the organization. Reutimann was limping around to try and stay in the top 35 in points when his car died at the end of the front straightaway, bringing out the caution. A wreck on the restart took out leaders Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon and damaged Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s car.

Movie Review: 'Ghost Rider, Spirit of Vengeance' not very ghostly

The action-Satanic film "Ghost Rider, Spirit of Vengeance," currently booming away at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, stars Nicholas Gage as Johnny Blaze, motorcycle stunt rider with a hangup that puts him in seclusion until summoned again to ride his motorcycle blazing with fire and to don his alter ego at Ghost Rider, with the burning skull.

Right off, this is a lousy movie from the making sense point of view and it is the latest in Gage's series of flops. But he keeps trying and his grimaces are standard stock from the past.

Centerline rumble strips to be installed on U.S. 50 through Mound House

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), in close cooperation with Lyon County, is scheduled to install centerline rumble strips for enhanced safety on nearly 10 miles of U.S. 50 in the Mound House area beginning approximately Dec. 19, weather permitting.

Consisting of parallel grooves cut into the middle centerline of a roadway, tires running over the rumble strips produce sound and vibration when drivers veer out of their lane. By alerting and allowing motorists to correct their vehicles, head-on crashes can be reduced.
