Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell was honored Sept. 15 by the Nevada Chapter of the American Planning Association with the DeBoer Award for Distinguished Leadership by an Elected Official, for his role in championing the Carson City Downtown Urban Design Streetscape Project.

Tesla Motors could be acquiring lithium closer to home after the company secured a supply deal from a location just a few hours away from its gigafactory site in Nevada.

Vancouver-based Pure Energy Minerals announced on Wednesday morning that it finalized an agreement with Tesla to potentially supply the company with lithium hydroxide for use in its batteries.

After lawmakers expressed frustration that Tesla, the recipient of a $1.3 billion tax incentive that helped bring its battery factory to the state, was planning to source an important metal for its batteries from a northern Mexico mine rather than from Nevada deposits, the company’s CEO Elon Musk tweeted that it was “definitely” pursuing sources of lithium in Nevada.

JB Straubel, co-founder and chief technical officer of Tesla Motors, will share an energizing overview of how advanced battery technologies and electric cars can pave the way toward energy independence and economic development, and how education and innovation plays a key role in reaching those goals.

Carson City Ward 2 Supervisor Brad Bonkowski will hold his monthly “Breakfast with Brad” on Friday, August 7, from 7 to 8 a.m. at the Cracker Box restaurant. All Carson City residents are invited to join Bonkowski for a cup of coffee.

“A current hot topic is whether there is, or will be, a Tesla effect in Carson City. I would love to talk with residents about that” Bonkowski said. “Growth, and its potential impact on our community, are important issues to talk about, but I’m open to discussing any city related issue.

The California Energy Commission has given the OK to award a $200,000 grant for the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency to create a plug-in Electric Vehicle Readiness Plan for the Lake Tahoe and Truckee region.

Earlier this year, Tesla Motors chose Northern Nevada for its battery factory in exchange for a huge incentives package. It's a bounty for communities there that, until recently, have seen years of slow economic recovery. Will Stone of Reno Public Radio reported for NPR's Morning Edition on the impact of this factory.

My wife and I were on the fence about whether or not to purchase the downtown building at 716 North Carson, previously known as Washington Street Station. After all, the building was more than half empty and had not attracted a new tenant in five years.

A bank had repossessed the building two years previously and had been unable to sell it even as it gradually cut the initial listing price almost in half. And to top things off, the building had extensive water damage throughout caused by a leaky roof, and the few tenants it did have were unhappy with conditions.

The Nevada State Demographer’s Office at the University of Nevada, Reno has released its most recent population projections for Nevada and its individual counties, projecting through 2033.

More than $4.4 million in federal funding will enable Western Nevada College to offer students more services to meet the skilled labor demands of today’s businesses. WNC in Carson City was selected as Nevada’s lead community college in the nation-wide $450 million job-driven training grants, as part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training program.

Administered by the Department of Labor, Nevada’s four community colleges will receive a total of $9,921,831 from October 1 through September 30, 2018.

The deal bringing Tesla Motors to Northern Nevada has stirred up a storm of interest from manufacturers, businesses, developers and real estate speculators.

The $5 billion Tesla battery factory deal sealed by Gov. Brian Sandoval and approved by a special session of the Legislature is a high-risk, high-reward project that could be a turning point for both the electric car company and Nevada as the state diversifies its economy and establishes itself as a leader in green energy.

But in the short term during the construction phase and with the planned hiring of 6,500 permanent workers, Tesla will put a strain on Northern Nevada where it will be built — from schools and roads to police and fire protection.

Seven days and six hours after he proposed giving the biggest tax break in Nevada history to Tesla Motors, Gov. Brian Sandoval signed the deal into law late Thursday night.
