Outdoors with Don Q: Great day at Lake Tahoe, except for the camera

Last week, Kevin Law of Carson City and I joined Gene (“Gino”) St. Denis of South Lake Tahoe, California for a morning of Mackinaw (Lake) Trout fishing at Lake Tahoe.

Gene is a longtime, good, personal friend and he is a premier sport fishing guide at South Lake Tahoe, known as Blue Ribbon Charters, 530-544-6552. He has fished Tahoe for some thirty years (the last twelve years as a fishing guide) and is one of the top, if not the top, guides at that lake.

Record snow pack and warm weather impact Lake Tahoe area streams and rivers

A flood advisory issued by the National Weather Service remains in effect until 9 p.m. on Friday for northeastern El Dorado and Placer Counties and includes creeks, streams and rivers near South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is cautioning residents and visitors to be aware of fast moving water and quick changing stream flows, according to a news release issued Tuesday.

Prescribed Fire Ops Possible Near Pioneer Trail and U.S. 50 Next Week

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews may conduct prescribed fire operations on the south side of the intersection of Pioneer Trail and U.S. Highway 50 in the community of Meyers near South Lake Tahoe early next week if weather conditions permit, according to a news release.

The project is about 30 acres and consists of piles of vegetation and woody materials remaining after fuels reduction efforts aimed at reducing wildfire risk to the community.

Highway 50 over Echo Summit tentatively set to re-open today

Weather and conditions permitting, U.S. Highway 50 over Echo Summit, the main artery into South Lake Tahoe and onto Carson City is tentatively set to re-open early this afternoon, according to Caltrans. The road was closed May 11 to remove and replace a damaged rock wall barrier.

Slick roads force cancellation of South Tahoe stage or Amgen Tour of California race

The first stage of the 2011 Amgen Tour of California was canceled minutes before it was set to begin because of concerns over snow and slick riding conditions at South Lake Tahoe. Organizers had hoped to shorten the course, but riders at the last minute voiced concern about conditions.

Start of Amgen Tour of California bicycle race delayed at Tahoe

Amgen Tour of California officials say they should have a decision by 9 a.m. as to what they intend to do about the Stage 1 kick-off set to begin at South Lake Tahoe given that snow is expected in the Sierra through the morning.

State gaming win up 5.13 percent for March

Nevada's casinos had a good month in March, posting a 5.13 percent increase over prior year according to figures released today by the Gaming Control Board.

The increase was led by a 12.89 percent increase on Las Vegas Strip, the state's largest gaming region. The Strip's blockbuster month made up for the declines posted at most of the other gaming regions. South Lake Tahoe posted the worst March numbers, a decline of 29.8 percent over prior year.

The Carson Valley region that includes Carson City posted a modest gain of .93 percent.

Outdoors with Don Q: Catchin' Mack on Blue Ribbon Charter at Lake Tahoe

This week’s feature is about a long time friend, Gene St. Denis, Captain of Blue Ribbon Charters at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. He offers daily fishing trips for Mackinaw, rainbow and brown trout on his sport fishing boat, “The PT-109,” at Lake Tahoe.

Mackinaw trout in the double digit class (10 pounds or more) in weight are not that uncommon on those charter trips. In fact, in the last two years, each time Elaine and I have fished with “Gino” she has caught a double digit “Mack” in weight.

Two years ago, her Mack weighed 20-pounds, 9-ounces (37.5 inches long) and it was the biggest fresh water fish that she has ever caught.

Foolin' the Big Fish: Record Mackinaw caught and released at Lake Tahoe

The sky was gradually beginning to get light in the east when I very quietly began to row my small, inflatable raft away from the Cave Rock boat launch on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe.

Just moments before, Elaine and I had neatly stowed our lunch, drinks, fishing poles, reels, tackle box, net, battery-operated fish finder and video camera into the bottom of the raft.

Snow for Show: Heavenly's 'Winter of all Winters'

The latest storm to hit South Lake Tahoe helped boost Heavenly Mountain Resort's year-to-date snow totals well past the 400-inch mark, or more than 30 feet, roughly enough snow to cover the famous Babe the Blue Ox statue in Klamath, Calif.

This is the third-best snow season in Heavenly’s history and forecasters are predicting as much as six more feet before this round of storms clears.

Kinder Kup Ski Race Series Final Event This Sunday

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will host the Kinder Kup Race Series finals at Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain Resort on Sunday, March 20, 2011 from 8a m to 2 pm.

Open to all skiers and snowboarders age six and under (as of Dec. 31, 2010), the Kinder Kup series at Lake Tahoe is designed to introduce young athletes to competition in a friendly environment.
