A candle is believed to have touched off a small fire inside an East John Street business early Friday morning, Carson City Fire Department officials said. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were called to Touched by Angels at 108 East John Street at around 3 a.m. after smoke was reported coming from the upper level of the business.

A Carson City man faces a felony charge of indecent exposure for allegedly masturbating in a parked vehicle outside a clothing outlet store in the 4200 block of South Carson Street.

9:48AM: Firefighters report the brush fire on Spooner/Highway 50 near the runaway truck ramp has been knocked down. The fire was reported to be 100-feet by 100-feet in size.

Traffic in the number one and two lanes of Highway 50/Spooner had been halted as firefighters responded. An investigations team has been ordered to find out the fire's origin. The westbound lanes were opened as of 9:51 a.m.

A Carson City woman faces a felony charge of battery with a deadly weapon after colliding with a vehicle Saturday afternoon at Ponderosa Drive and and Koontz Lane.

Lisa Spangenthal, age not provided, was booked into Carson City Jail after being arrested at 1:47 p.m. She also faces a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of drugs.

According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to the incident that involved an Oldsmobile Cutlass and a 2011 Hyundai. The Hyundai had major front end damage on the passenger side.

UPDATE: A brush fire reported late this morning was quickly extinguished after Carson City firefighters arrived.
Dispatch reports the fire was small and firefighters doused it before it had room to spread. More than 20 911 calls were made about smoke reported around Northridge and North Roop streets.

Carson City Fire Department crews are responding late this morning to a brush fire, reported to be in the area of Northridge and North Roop streets. The fire, reported by several 911 calls to dispatch has been reported to be in an area of some hills.

A 44-year-old Chester, Calif., woman was arrested and faces a felony charge of giving Carson City officers false identification to avoid prosecution after being stopped in a vehicle in which the driver was seen throwing something out the window.

Carson City firefighters battled a fully-engulfed blaze at an apartment complex early Tuesday morning that forced the evacuation of several residents.

The fire, reported at around 1:30 a.m., was at the Comstock Apartments, 1215 East Fifth Street near the corner of Parkland in Carson City. It began in a lower unit and spread to nearby apartments on the ground and top floor and into the attic. There were no reported injuries to any of the apartment tenants though one declined treatment for smoke inhalation, said Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi. No firefighters were hurt.

Prescribed fires at Lake Tahoe's east shore above Glenbrook and north shore have been blowing smoke into Carson City.
Fire and fuel crews with the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit of the Forest Service began the controlled burns today. Winds in front of a storm system are pushing smoke into the area, confirmed Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi.

UPDATE 10:30PM: The apartment fire Monday afternoon at a complex off of Airport Road in Carson City was caused by a child playing with a lighter, Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi confirmed. Flame from the lighter touched off blankets and the fire spread, he said.

UPDATE 2:29PM: Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi reports no injuries and several animals rescued at a fire inside an apartment/townhome complex in the 3400 block of Airport Road.

Carson City fire crews knocked down a blaze inside a storage shed adjacent to a home in the 200 block of Paiute and Curry streets.

No one was injured. Three crews responded to the blaze, reported at 3:30 a.m. Fire officials said damage from the fire is unknown as is the cause but noted that flames consumed the storage shed and emitted a lot of smoke.

"The shed is pretty full so we'll be here a while cleaning it up," said Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi.

UPDATE: Carson City authorities used tear gas to detain a man dressed in a black sweater who had barricaded himself inside a home near Silver Sage and Roventini Way.

John Vallerio, 22, was taken into custody at around 8:10 p.m. after a SWAT used tear gas to smoke him out of the house he had been holed up in for more than three hours, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. Vallerio had escaped authorities at 4:39 p.m. after he was about to be served arrest warrants from the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

Carson City fire crews knocked down a fire Tuesday night that produced heavy smoke inside the fungus-based pharmaceutical company Aloha Medicinals in the 2300 block of Arrowhead Drive.

Damage was confined to a dust collection system, which caught fire when sawdust-like material ignited during a mill and grind operation, said Carson City Battalion Chief Eric Bero.

The fire was reported as an alarm at 5:35 p.m. and crews had flames knocked down 5:47p.m., with the situation reported under control at 6:36 p.m.

A two-car detached garaged burned this morning in Silver Springs, Lyon County Manager Jeffery Page reports.
The Central Lyon County Fire Protection District was dispatched to the 3600 block Onyx Street at 6:56 a.m. Upon arrival crews found the garage involved with heavy smoke and fire. It took crews approximately 30 minutes to knock down the fire, Page reports. There were no injuries and crews remained on the scene Monday morning doing mop up.

A San Francisco man was arrested and faces felony credit card forgery charges after equipment used to make cards was found inside a Carson City hotel room, authorities said.

Joshua Jeremiah Sims, 41, was arrested in the 900 block of South Carson Street Dec. 15 at 3:45 p.m. According to the Carson City Sheriff's Office arrest report, officers responded to a call about credit card making equipment found inside a room after Sims had failed to check out earlier in the day.

UPDATE 1:56AM: Carson City fire investigators are trying to determine what caused a fire late Saturday night that destroyed about 50 percent of a manufactured home in the 1700 block of Race Track Road.
Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief Bob Charles said the fire, initially reported as being inside a garage, was found to be fully engulfed in the front patio area and then spread to the main interior of the home before it was extinguished. With a number of add-ons, the manufactured home is believed to be about 2,200 square-feet in size.

UPDATE 1:59PM: A small brush fire, thought to be touched off by target shooters, was declared under control by Carson City firefighters at 1:57 p.m. The fire, which burned about an acre, is near the top of Goni Pit. The target shooters reportedly admitted the fire started during target shooting and were speaking with Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies.

UPDATE 3:26PM: The fire burning in East Washoe Valley is 50 percent contained as of 3:22 this afternoon. Two out-buildings were destroyed, and no homes burned. Mutual aid firefighters called to fight the Lyon Fire, are now being relieved and remaining crews are doing mop-up, said Truckee Meadows Fire Chief Charlie Moore.
The fire burned about 5 acres. As of 3:20 winds had considerably lessened and the fire is putting out a fraction of the smoke it had earlier in the day when it started at around 12:30, Moore said. Eastlake Boulevard is opened at Highway 395 south. Residents who were evacuated from the area can return to their homes and should have photo identification with them.
"The chances of the fire growing larger are quite minimal. There is little risk to structures and property and the rest now is left to mopping up," Moore said.

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews will conduct prescribed fire operations near Taylor Creek on Lake Tahoe’s South Shore and on Alice Lane in the Meeks Bay area of the West Shore, Friday, Oct. 26. Each area is approximately one-quarter acre. On Sunday, Oct. 28, prescribed fire operations will take place in the Timberland area of the West Shore, weather permitting.

UPDATE 1:10PM: Sierra Ridge residents who were evacuated earlier this afternoon are beginning to return to their apartments after a fire and heavy smoke forced an evacuation. Carson City firefighters called for an evacuation at the Russell Way senior housing complex after smoke and a fire came from the third floor. The fire was quickly extinguished but smoke occupied much of the complex making it a safety hazard. The senior citizen residents began returning to their apartments at around 1 p.m.

A Carson City couple face felony drug and gross misdemeanor child neglect charges after authorities were led to methamphetamine and marijuana inside the home, described as "filthy" by arresting officers.

A Carson City man faces felony drug charges after authorities received a search warrant and found heroin and methamphetamine. Edward Dale Cheney, 23, was arrested Oct. 15 and faces the drug charges as well as misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of a suspended sentence.

Two commercial burglaries early Monday morning in Douglas County have authorities asking the public for help in identifying the suspects with photos provided by surveillance cameras.
The first burglary occurred at the Verizon Wireless Outlet Store on Waterloo Ln sometime around 5 am, said Douglas County Sheriff's Sgt. Jim Halsey. Entry was made by the suspect smashing the glass of the exterior window of the store. Two cellular telephones, phone chargers and miscellaneous currency were stolen from inside. Carson City firefighters arrived at a structure fire at 611 Telegraph at about 6:45 p.m. on Monday night. Located between Anderson and Walsh streets, the commercial-residential building was unoccupied at the time and construction work on the foundation appeared to have been ongoing with renovations and work being done on the inside.

UPDATE 8PM: The U.S. Forest Service reports Friday night that the fire burning on the Douglas County side of Lake Tahoe on public land off of Elks Point Road has been contained at 2.6 acres. Cheva Heck, spokeswoman for the Forest Service, said local government resources assigned to the fire are being released. An engine will remain at the fire site overnight. The cause of the fire is under investigation. "We have no reports with lightning or problems with power lines. The fire is believed to be human caused," she said.

UPDATE 8:45AM: Highway 395 has reopened with controls (pilot vehicle) so expect delays and watch for fire vehicles, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.
The fire, which has burned more than 2,000 acres, is burning mostly upslope east of Highway 395 into predominately BLM public lands in the southern Pine Nut Mountains. There is a decreasing threat to approximately 30 homes west of the highway. If the fire were to jump the highway, however, this is looking less likely as fire personnel consolidate fire lines. No structures have been lost at this time. Power lines down at the fire scene, but they are deenergized, which is impacting some local rural residences. The fire is 5 percent contained. Full containment expected by Sept. 24. An aerial reconnaisance this morning will evaluate fire acreage and behavior. Nine airtankers are currently assigned to the incident, which includes four large airtankers and five single-engine airtankers (SEATs).
Structure protection is being handled by units of the East Fork Fire Protection District (Douglas County).
Incident Command Post is at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
One minor firefighter non-burn injury reported.

UPDATE 4PM: The Como Fire burning southeast of Dayton continues to burn, consuming 400 acres with no estimate of containment or control, reports Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch. No structures are threatened. The fire is burning on BLM land and is spreading due to gusty winds. The fire is burning 2.5 miles south of Rawe Peak in the Pinenut Mountains. Air tankers, helicopters and hand crews have been assigned to the fire. Mark Struble with Sierra Front reports the fire was likely caused by a lightning strike from a thunderstorm on Saturday.
